WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT |
🗳️ Federal Liberal Leadership |
▪️Member of Parliament for Nepean, Chandra Arya, has been disqualified as a candidate for Liberal leader. Arya, who promised to abolish the monarchy and said it would not matter to French Canada that he did not speak French, has not been told why he was disqualified by the party. Rockcliffe’s – we think – Mark Carney, Chrystia Freeland, Karina Gould, Jaime Battiste, Frank Baylis, and Ruby Dhalla have all been accepted as leadership candidates. | | Peter Zimonjic at CBC |
🏒 Sens |
▪️The Sens will be spend four or five days in Québec at a training camp, and will play two pre-season matches there. Toronto billionaire Michael Andlauer, owner of the team, says that he has no plans to move the team and he believes in ‘Ottawa – Gatineau’. | | Bruce Garrioch in the Ottawa Citizen |
➕. Related Some Sens fans are upset that Spartacat, the team mascot, wore a jersey that was half Ottawa Senators and half Quebéc Nordiques. |
🏢 Tunney’s Pasture |
▪️The National Capital Commission is planning to add up to 9,000 new housing units and cut public employee office space to 7,600. The new Tunney’s Pasture plan also includes nearly 80,000 square metres of parks. The Commission made the announcement at its board meeting last Thursday. | | Blair Crawford in the Ottawa Citizen |

BUT, ONE MORE THING … |
Yesterday, we saw a plea from the What’s Up Arnprior Facebook group asking people to come out to the Eastern Ontario Super Hockey League match between the Arnprior Rivermen and South Dundas Rockets. The poster noted that the previous match had only 61 people attend. So THE OTTAWAN did. And watched the Arnprior Rivermen – formerly the West Carleton Rivermen – get smoked by South Dundas 3 - 7. But so did 229 other people who answered the plea. It was a great afternoon. The league is an interesting creation. It’s semi-pro, featuring AHL, NCAA, and OHL players but not part of the established hockey system. Besides the Rivermen, other teams in the Capital are the Manotick Mariners, Paugan Falls Rapids, and Pontiac Senior Comets. At an average ticket price of $10 per game, it’s worth giving your support. |
There is, however, one team in the league that THE OTTAWAN thinks is probably paying its expenses strictly on merch sales. Readers, meet the Lindsay Barncats. Who wouldn’t want this adorable logo on a t-shirt? |
