🚊 NO Train: Day 0️⃣ continues

Here are today’s updates on the O Train.

•  The Confederation Line continues to run a limited, single-carriage service on the full line.
•  The handover of under-construction Trillium line has been delayed to the next month. The builders expected to hand over the line in October but delays in signal testing have pushed it to November. (Josh Pringle at CTV).
•  Former transportation planner and creator of the RM Transit YouTube and Substack  Reece Martin is a guest on the the Big Story podcast on the topic ‘Why does (most of) Canada suck at building transit?’. Says Martin, ‘These are extremely complicated projects, and you want to get the details right, and when you don’t, you have an Ottawa LRT situation’. (The Big Story podcast)

💦 NO Fun: Day 1️⃣

Although tonight would have been the night to register for the City's non-aquatic programs, registration has been postponed. The brand-new registration system, which replaced the old system that could not handle more than 450 people simultaneously, broke soon after registration for aquatic programs opened on Monday night. 

While non-aquatic programmes cannot be registered, swimming activities are still available for registration.

•  Clarendon Café in Quyon has been reopened by the grandson of the original operator. Clarendon Café opens this Friday at a new location, Hwy 148 and Wolf Lake Road. Quyon, of course, is best visited by taking the 10 minute ferry across the Ottawa River from Fitzroy Harbour. (Charles Dickson in The Equity)
•  Ottawa Road Trips has five suggestions for coffee shops to visit southwest of Ottawa: Village Pantry, Spencerville, the Sweet Life Café, Brockville,  Cosies, Brockville, Vanilla Beans Café and Creamery, Westport,  Recess Café, Portland, and the Village Bean Coffee House, Merrickville. This is a sponsored post by some economic development agency to Ottawa Road Trips but the suggestions are solid. the ottawan got nothing from no-one.
•  Peter Hum in the Ottawa Citizen went on a chicken run and found five charcoal-grilled winners: the Burrell Farm stand, Tikka Charcoal Grill, Pili Pili Grilled Chicken,YKO Chicken BBQ, and Laziz Broast and Mix Grill. First among equals was the Burrell Farm stand, which inspired Hum to have jerk chicken for breakfast.
•  A horror-themed coffee shop has opened in Carleton Place. Deadly Grounds Café and Curiosities is open Tues - Sun at 1 Costello Dr. We like the sound of the Dammit Janet tea latte not only because of the pumpkin and vanilla flavourings but also the name is a pretty deep cut horror reference.
•  Broadhead has released two fan faves: the Mexican Lager and Lime and their award-winning Hefeweizen. Neither will last forever, so if your beer fridge needs restocking best get ordering.
•  Whiprsnapr’s new Neapolitan Ice Cream Ale makes a final nod to the flavours of a summer ice cream parlour, with chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry all featuring in the 6% ale. Available from Thursday. Warning: it contains lactose.

🌊 Water News

•  The Wakefield Spring has been under a boil-water advisory since July 18. The publicly available municipal spout has provided fresh spring water to anyone with a container since the 1950s but is currently contaminated with fecal coliform. (Celeste Decaire at CBC) (Find a Spring page)
•  Nobody really knows what to do about the sewage overflowing from the city into the Ottawa River. The Combined Sewer Storage Tunnel has worked great so far since it was built in 2020 at reducing everyday sewage but it can’t handle the storms of the future. (Elyse Skura at CBC)
•  Flood insurance may soon be available to all Canadian property owners. Public Safety Canada is working with the Insurance Bureau of Canada on a new way to cover homes at risk of flooding that previously were uninsurable. (Anjuli Patil at CBC)

🏗️ Experimental Farm

•  The planning and housing committee has approved two high rises that may cause shadows upon the Experimental Farm. Scientists had opposed the rezoning to approve taller building because the shadows would impact agricultural studies on the Farm. City Council will vote on it Aug 23. (Ted Raymond at CTV)

🚨 Fake Nurse

•  The fake nurse, Brigitte Cleroux, has three new charges. Cleroux, who is serving seven years for posing as a nurse in Ottawa, is aleady awaiting trial for 17 charges in Vancouver. The three new charges are for posing as a fake nurse in Victoria. (Bethany Lindsay at CBC)

📺 Ross Video

•  Ross Video, the company that provided the viewscreens at the last SuperBowl, is cutting nine per cent of its staff. A company spokesperson says that while the company is still growing, it’s growing slower than expected, and so must reduce staff to match the anticipated growth. (Josh Pringle at CTV)

🌲 Parks Canada

•  The Public Service Alliance of Canada has ratified its contract with Parks Canada. Workers will receive compounded wage increases of at least 12.6 per cent and protection against contracting out. The remote working language is similar to the other contracts signed with the Treasury Board, that is ‘we’ll work it out’. (Catherine Morrison in the Ottawa Citizen)

•  Hot Wench Market pops up at Morning Owl Parkdale, just in time to co-exist alongside Parkdale Night Market. What you’ll find: vintage fashion and cool decor items, crafts, and art. 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm at 229 Armstrong St.

•  The Merry Dairy will be popping up in Greely from 12:30 to 2:00 pm and Queensway Terrace North from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm.

Tomorrow

•  In honour of Black Cat Appreciation Day, the ottawan’s resident felines Bodie and Wiggy will take over our Instagram account. Please note, however, that neither cat is 100% black. In fact, Bodie is actually a rich dark brown colour*, and Wigmore possesses a fine black and white Tuxedo pattern. *In our defence, we adopted the cats on a dark, late February afternoon in London UK's East end, and they were living in a rooftop shelter, and in that dim light Bodie appeared black as a chimney sweep's cheeks.
•  The Merry Dairy pops up at Morgan’s Grant from 3:30 pm to 4:15 pm and at Glen Cairn in Kanata from 5:00 to 6:30.
•  Ottawa Music Industry Coalition, Music.Art.Ppl., and In the Glebe BIA present the Lansdowne Park Summer Showcase featuring DJ Furrit, DJ Pithra, Kina Ink, and Ottawa Shufflers Community. 6:00pm to 8:00pm.

Friday 

•  McGregor’s Orchard is now open for the season. Pick your own Zinnias, buy lavender products from the farm store, and you might even find some early Paula Red apples.
•  The Greek Festival continues with lunch served between noon and 2:00 pm and the evening’s programming starting at 5:00 pm.
•  The town of Pakenham’s Come Home to Pakenham Festival opens Friday afternoon at 4:00 pm with a beer festival. Enjoy the fine beers, ciders, and spirits of Dairy Distllery (makers of Vodkow), Farmgate Cider, Cartwright Springs, Ridge Rock Brewing Co., Kin Vineyards and Cold Bear Brewing Co. It's all in and around the Stewart Community Centre, 112 MacFarlane St, in Pakenham.
•  Be immersed in Celtic soundscapes at Art House café. This evening’s Celtic Illusions show combines traditional music with electric instruments. $15 at the door.

•  Maker Feed’s Wine Workshop on October 4 is for any level of enthusiast. The event includes tastings of five wines, nibbles, and membership in Maker Feed CO’s Wine and Food Club.
