HELLO OTTAWA

  • Ottawa Bulldog turned us on to this: Kitchissippi ward councillor Jeff Leiper has created a calculator on his website that shows how the proposed zoning changes would affect your address.

  • It's a little finicky but you enter the length and width of your property, choose your current zoning, and voilà, the maximum number of new units that can be built at your address is shown.

  • If you don't know your zoning, enter your address on this City page and it will tell you. If you live in a rural area, somehow live in an industrial park, or up a tree somewhere, Leiper did not consider your needs and your zone won't be considered. For everyone else, it should work.

  • Try out the calculator here.

    WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

    ⚕️ Hawkesbury Hospital

    •  The doctor charged in 2022 with the deaths of four seniors at Hawkesbury and District General Hospital has been acquitted. Dr Brian Nadler had been charged with first degree murder each of four seniors under his care in the hospital. Nadler had always maintained his innocence, with his lawyers arguing that the four seniors had died of COVID 19. The Crown presented no evidence at the trial, resulting in the acquittal. (Marlo Glass and Aedan Helmer in the Ottawa Citizen)

    💽 Corel

    • The co-creator of the WordPefect word processing programme has died in Utah, aged 76. This is a stretch for an Ottawa connection, but don’t worry, we’ll get there. Bruce Bastian was a graduate student in 1979 when he helped create one of the first successful word processing programmes for the Utah city of Orem. Somehow, he kept the copyright and WordPefect dominated offices for years until Microsoft Office came along. In 1996, Ottawa software behemoth Corel bought it, powering years of success then later, not so much. Corel changed its name in 2022 to Alludo. (Curtis Booker in the Daily Herald) (You can still buy WordPerfect)

    🛻 Convoy News

    •  A man acquitted from charges in the Convoy occupation has been ordered to be retried. Evan Blackman was charged with mischief and obstructing police but was acquitted at his trial last October, in part, because the judge ruled that he may not have known that the police had ordered everyone to leave. The appeal judge disagreed, and said that by kneeling in front of the police, he was being obstructive. (Blair Crawford in the Ottawa Citizen)

    🗳️ Goldie Ghamari

    •  The Member of the Provincial Parliament for Carleton, Goldie Ghamari, has been booted out of the Progressive Conservative caucus by Premier Doug Ford. Ghamari had taken a video meeting with British campaigner Tommy Robinson who has been convicted of assault and rails against immigrants and Islam. Robinson is in Canada for a cross-country speaking tour. Ghamari, who immigrated to Canada from Iran, says she was unaware of Robinson’s history and met with him to discuss ‘Canada's recent decision to list Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist entity’, a position they both support. (Faith Greco at CBC)
