HELLO OTTAWA

Canadian Independent Bookstore Day is just around the corner, and there are two upcoming ways to win great prizes.

First, the Ottawa Indie Bookstore Crawl returns after a successful launch last year. The event involves touring around Ottawa’s these fine indie shops to collect stamps on a specially designed card: Books on BeechwoodMill Street BooksPerfect BooksSinging Pebble BooksThe Spaniel's TaleWestboro BooksOctopus Books, and World of Maps. Collect the stamps from Friday April 26 to Sunday April 28 to be entered into a draw to win a $200 Ottawa indie bookstore shopping spree.

The other way to win is on the big day itself: simply shop at any of the above stores to be in with a chance to win $1000 from indiebookstore.ca.

Thank you!

We’re thrilled and touched by the number of people who have signed up for an ottawan membership, plus all the nice words people wrote. For those eligible, we‘ll be sending out emails today asking which t-shirt you would like. We felt we were taking a huge risk but we feel so much better now.

      WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

      🌊 Ottawa River

      •  The Ottawa River Planning Board is warning residents in low lying areas to be wary of floods. While water levels in Ottawa, Arnprior, and Gatineau are normal for this time of year, the water levels up river are much higher. (William Eltherington at CTV)

      🚨 Ottawa Police Service

      •  An Ottawa constable has pleaded guilty for assaulting a 13 year-old boy with mental health issues. Police took the boy to CHEO after responding to a call from his mother, who reported the boy was violent and not taking his meds. At the hospital, the boy continued to verbally insult the constable, who then assaulted the boy for 10 minutes in front of a nurse and the other constable. The Crown wants a 30-day conditional sentence order with house arrest, while the constable wants a conditional discharge and community service. (Joseph Tunney at CBC)

      🚊 O Train

      •  The western extention of the O Train could open by 2027, says City. This is the bit of the line that will run from Tunney’s Pasture west to Moodie Drive, with a spur to Algonquin College. It was planned to open in 2025. See some nice pictures of the tunnel in the story. (Marlo Glass in the Ottawa Citizen)

      🚲 E-Bikes

      •  An entrepreneur’s dream of an all e-bike service in Hawkesbury has been quashed by provincial law. Sylvin Laramée had applied twice to Hawkesbury council to run the service, which he says is popular in France. Council deferred to the Ontario Provincial Police which said that e-bikes are not considered motor vehicles and only drivers of motor vehicles can receive compensation as taxi drivers under the Public Vehicles Act. Hawkesbury is about one hour east of Ottawa. (James Morgan in The Review) (Turtle – an example of an e-bike taxi service in Paris)
