HELLO OTTAWA

  • In today’s ottawan:

    → Happy hour hideaways

  • → Look up in the sky! It's a bird!? It’s a plane!? No, it’s Gatineau Balloon festival tomorrow!

  • → Kids who took oral polio vaccines are not considered vaccinated for school

– Martha and Darren

WEDNESDAY DINING + DRINKING UPDATE

  • It’s not very summery out there today. Duck into one of these bars this afternoon or evening for some warming deals on drinks and small plates:

🍸 The Short Club’s Low Tide Happy Hour means half price oysters, $2 Prawns, $3.50 Sliders, and $8 Sapporo Draft from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm.

🍸 Apothecary Lounge has the latest night Happy Hour that we know of: it starts at 10:00 pm.

🍸 The North & Navy 5 à 7 menu features lively little bites with delicious drinks including $10 Negronis and Bubbly.

🍸 Visit Absinthe from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm today or 2:00 pm to 5:30 pm tomorrow and Friday for bar rail doubles priced at $10, local beers for $6, and an order of Duck Wings for $15.

  • There’s always something to sample at Aurelius Fine Olive Oils & Balsamic Vinegars. This Saturday (August 31) from noon to 2:00 pm stop by the shop to try watermelon with a drizzle of Blueberry Balsamic. We suspect it will be the flavour burst that your summer-loving taste buds are craving. 1283B Wellington St. W., K1Y 3A8

  • Impress your friends with your mixology skills. Split Tree Cocktail Co’s new collection of classes cover martinis, Tiki drinks, Gin, and more.

  • Camp Fortune is offering Fall Brunches with all the classic menu items and a killer view on October 6, 13 and 14. Email bamarica@campfortune.com to reserve.

  • Peter Hum in the Ottawa Citizen felt his heart skip a beat when he learned that Charm Thai Cuisine had a secret, all deep fried menu. Hum’s favourite dish, however, was the khaw pad sapparot, ‘a grand fried rice, studded with chicken, raisins, cashew nuts and pineapple, which makes more sense here than it does on pizza’.

  • CTV has plotted out the 183 new gas stations and convenience storeswhere you can buy beer and wine as of next week.

  • Ameya Charnalia at Eat the Strip has discovered a new greasy spoon breakfast, Cindy’s Restaurant, correctly located in an industrial park near the airport. The breakfast hash was ‘perfectly salty. The sausages and bacon cooked perfectly, with the latter nice and crispy’.

  • Kiersten Vuorimaki in Apt 613’s Best Bites column eats at Maria’s Tacos (It’s ‘a literal hole in the wall, dishing out fresh tacos from a window in Maverick’s on Rideau Street’), Lima Peruvian Rotisserie (‘the elevated chicken experience that we’ve all been needing’),  and Di Rienzo (‘if you’re new to town, or haven’t been brought here by someone who loves you and wants you to eat good things, this is for you’).

  • Every week Donavan Burey reviews all the grocery flyers and posts the deals to Ottawa Reddit. This week, he’s finding ‘nice sales on carrots, onions, celery, potatoes, beets, squash, and cabbage varieties’.

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

📱 Ottawa Carleton District School Board

  • The Ottawa Carleton District School Board has outlined its plans on how to handle new provincial regulations on phones and vaping. It will be a three strike system. First strike, the teacher will take the phone; second strike, the principal will take the phone; and in the third strike, the phone will be used to call the student’s parents. Kindergarteners to grade six will be allowed to carry the phone on silent; older kids cannot use their phones in classrooms. As for vaping, it joins cigarettes and joints in the banned category. (Nicole Williams at CBC)

➕ Related Ottawa Public Health says that kids who received oral polio vaccines since April 2016 are no longer considered vaccinated for school. Only injected polio vaccines are considered acceptable now. Details about updating are on the Ottawa Public Health page.

⚱️ Beechwood Cemetery

  • Beechwood Cemetery has created a new service, the Shared Memories lot, for people who have been entrusted with urns and are worried about the future. The article linked here is actually a paid promotion by Beechwood to CityNews but the notion is valid. Some people have urns but no family members for it to be passed on – yet they don’t want to get rid of it in an undignified manner. The Shared Memories lot is a communal garden in a prominent location where the urns, for a fee, can be brought. (David DeRocco at CityNews) (Beechwood Shared Memories Lot)

Long Runs

Just Announced / Now Booking

  • Here’s the conundrum: you’re a world class introvert, but the band your friend manages – which has been gaining massive traction whilst touring in Europe – is playing the Brass Monkey this Saturday night (August 31), and you don’t want to miss out.

Originating in Montréal, The Damn Truth produce rock and roll with power vocals from Lee-La Baum and full-throttle musicianship from guitarist Tom Shemer, bass-player PY Letellier, and drummer Dave Traina. Raw Rampdescribes the band as “... an incendiary kaboom of commotion, with blazing vocals, powder-keg rhythms, and flaming guitars. This is immense. It’s a nitro-glycerine love-bomb!”

So introvert, do you do? You buy a ticket, grab your beer money, and go, of course. You can decompress on Sunday. (The Damn Truth play Ottawa’s The Brass Monkey, Saturday, 250 A Greenbank Road. Supported by Iconoclast, the Space Between, and Albion. Tickets $31.37

  • If you’re like Martha and wonder how in the world 3D printers create stuff, register for Demo Night: Introduction to 3D Printing by Ottawa Tool Library(Wednesday, September 11). It’s an intro session that will prep you for borrowing the OTL’s 3D printer for your next project. Tickets $17.15 (members) and $19.56 for non-members.

DEAL OF THE DAY

Book a staycation at the Calabogie Peaks Hotel between now and December 18, 2024, and save 20%

BUT, ONE MORE THING ...

Tobi Lütke, founder of local mom-and-pop business Shopify created a debate on Twitter over his insistence that the first day of the week is Monday, not Sunday. ‘The first day of the week is Monday. I lived in North America for 23 years but I’m going to die on this hill. Sunday as first day is just crazy talk,’ he says. Joseph Brean in the National Post lays out the history of what is considered the first day of the week and says Lütke’s view is a more modern, secular, capitalist notion called the Lunartic view.
