WEDNESDAY FOOD + DRINK UPDATE

  • As if we needed another reason to be excited that Merry Dairy’s Postal Code popups start its Summer 2024 run on Saturday: Aurelius Fine Oils & Balsamics are sponsoring a free Merry Dairy ice cream for the first 50 customers. Find out where and when the truck will show up here.
  • Maker Feed Co continues its series of special dining events with a California Night tasting menu on Thursday August 29. Try wine products from Napa Valley, Sonoma, Mendocino, Carneros, Santa Rosa, and others, and a menu featuring five courses.
  • The chef-owner of Atelier, Marc Lepine, is opening a second 20 seat restaurant on Somerset Street West called La Petite Sauterelle.  ‘The Little Grasshopper’ will feature a year round indoor vegetable garden. Lepine says ‘Seasons will be eliminated, it will be constant summer and the menu will showcase that’. He expects to open La Petite Sauterelle later this year.
  • Apt 613 has a story on Black Ottawa foodies: Revello Williamson of Reviews by Revello (Instagram), Nadia Murisa of Spotted Ottawa (Instagram), and Alyssa Brown of Ottawa Eats (also Instagram).
  • Tickets are now on sale – and they always sell out – for The Chef’s Table at the National Arts Centre. Tables are for 2, 4, 6, or 8 people and you must book the entire table. The line-up will be:

    Chef Connor McQuay, executive sous-chef at the National Arts Centre. Music by Mikhail Laxton and Rebecca Noelle.

    National Arts Centre executive chef Kenton Leier will co–chef each night.

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

💰 Finance and Corporate Services Committee

  •  The City’s Finance and Corporate Services Committee has voted to bar ward councillors from negotiating donations from developers. The debate is over whether a donation to a ward whose councillor will be voting on a developer’s project could be considered voluntary. City Council will decide at an upcoming meeting if the ban is to be enacted. (Elyse Skura at CBC)

🤕 The Ottawa Hospital

  • The private company that provides scalp cooling therapy at the Ottawa Hospital may leave due to lack of business. The technology is used to cool hair follicles on the scalp which helps protect them from chemotherapy, possibly resulting in less hair loss. The Paxman Scalp Cooling Systems costs $400 per session and is not covered by OHIP. (Elizabeth Payne in the Ottawa Citizen)

🚲 Paris Olympics

  •  Three local cyclists have been chosen for Team Canada at the Paris OlympicsMike Woods and Derek Gee, both from Ottawa, will compete in the road race. Ariane Bonhomme of Gatineau will compete in the endurance division of track. (Canadian Olympic Committee)
  • In track and field, four have been selected for Team Canada: Audrey Leduc of Gatineau, and Jacqueline Madogo, Eliezer Adjibi, and Lauren Gale, all of Ottawa. The Paris Olympics begin July 26. (Martin Cleary in Ottawa Sports Pages)

🪂 SkyHawks

  •  A member of the SkyHawks, the Canadian Armed Forces parachute team, was seriously injured during the Canada Day performance on Parliament Hill. The parachutist hit the ground at a high rate of speed at 3:00 pm. The Armed Forces say the member has serious but not life threatening injuries. (William Eltherington at CTV)

  • A massive 12 sonic creators from Ottawa and beyond, at two different venues, all in a single night: That’s the music event that is Coriolis: 5 years of Fun, presented by Congrego and Montréal’s Also Cool. Head to Club SAW for the first part of the night, then make your way to city at night for part two. Tickets are $35 at the door, or $20 plus charges online. 

  • If the the Nickelback show at Ottawa Bluesfest doesn’t give you enough Nickelback, Emo Night Ottawa can help. They’re presenting A Love Letter to Chad at Berlin from 10:00 pm, where they'll be spinning hits from the band as well as some of your other alt-rock faves. 56 ByWard Market.

Ottawa Tourism has published a ‘Great patios by Ottawa neighbourhood’ article and it’s pretty comphrehensive. So many, in fact, that we can’t really encapsulate it. But it’s July in Ottawa – we have maybe 21, 22 days left to enjoy patio living.
