    WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

🌊 Westboro Beach has reopened after a three year closure. The renovation by the National Capital Commission includes picnic space, outdoor showers, renovated bathrooms, a café, an ice-cream shop, and soon, a restaurant. The three 50 year-old brutalist towers remain. – CBC

↪Last week, we wrote about a plan by the National Capital Commission to build rowhouses on Sussex Drive, across the street from the Prime Minister’s official residence. Alain Miguelez, vice-president, Capital Planning, at the National Capital Commission, has defended the plan in the Ottawa Citizen. He points out that unlike the bad old days when the Commission demolished areas like LeBreton Flats, they now  beautify and revitalize areas as they have done with River House, Kìwekì Point, and the Westboro Beach pavilion. He notes that the planned area of Sussex Drive once included ‘apartment houses, a fire station, a hotel and various shops’  – The right kind of housing could enhance Sussex Drive in the Ottawa Citizen

🎓 The University of Ottawa has announced an expansion of its Kanata campus. The article has a decent photo – it’s not quite the landed spaceship of the Apple headquarters but it is on a circular street.  – Rachel Morgan at CityNews

🔥 The Mayor of Rideau Lakes Township did not waste time in using his new ‘strong mayor’ powers. The Province granted 138 municipalities ‘strong mayor’ powers, the same as held by the mayors of Ottawa and Toronto, earlier this year. One of the powers is to veto council votes about development. In this case, mayor Arie Hoogenboom figured that a council decision to get quotes for a renovation of town hall was worth vetoing. The end result is that the renovation will not go ahead. Rideau Lakes Township is near Smiths Falls. – Campbell MacDiarmid at CBC

🚊 The O Train’s Line 1 will be taking a lot of time off in JuneThe Line will be completely closed Saturday June 14, and Sunday June 15, 22, and 29. It will be partially closed Fri June 6 to Sun 8 in the evening, and after 10 pm June 12. We do like the graphic that OC Transpo created. – Rachel Morgan at CityNews

Last time, we asked ‘Will the RedBlacks take the Grey Cup this year?’

    21% Yes, all the way

29% No, but they’ll win the Eastern semi-final

5% No, but they’ll win the Eastern final

45% No. Just no. Our hearts have been broken far too many times to allow hope.
