HELLO OTTAWA

January is makeover month for many of us; we resolve to start exercising, we go on diets, and we buy new bed linens. If it’s time for you to change up your living space in a small, affordable way, there are lots of ideas, training courses, and of course plants to be found at Ottawa’s florists.
▪️Flowers Talk Tivoli has new shipment of succulents, air plants, and orchids. Also has new planters and pots and sale items (including felted Christmas ornaments) from the holiday season.

▪️Rebel Petal has easy to care for Air Plants from $35 (the smaller plant is sold out). Meanwhile, the store’s range of ribbed candle holders (from $5) would look fabulous clustered on a coffee table.

▪️Order a DIY Terrarium Master Kit from The Urban Botonist ($85), and you’ll have a succulent habitat at which to gaze all year round.

▪️Bouquets of dried flowers from Capital Florist’s Forever Collection will glam up a mantelpiece or side table. Prices start at $3 for a single bloom to $20 for a Eucalyptus bunch. Arrange single blossoms in grouped bud vases (available in neutral pink and white or black) from $12.

▪️While its gorgeous house plants are sold out, Bloomfields’ selection of homewares will add a touch of glamour to a locked down living room. The collection includes home and self care products from Quebec’s La Vie, candles and posey arrangements, and lambs wool throw blankets for cozying down. $75 - $165.

▪️Angelica Florist has adorable mini dried wreaths that would make a great statement when grouped on the wall. $7 each.

We'll see you tomorrow – Martha and Darren

#WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

▪️Two year-old with spinal muscular atrophy needs $2 million medicine, not covered by Ontario health. Had Health Canada not approved the medicine, the manufacturer would possibly provide it for free but since it is approved, Novartis Pharmaceuticals Canada wants provinces to pay for it.  [CBC] [Go Fund Me]

▪️New 40-bed temporary hospital opens at the Ottawa Hospital in the parking lot. It's actually a glorified emergency room – the idea is for paramedics to drop patients off from their ambulance then get back on the road, rather than keep the patient and wait for admittance.  [CBC]

▪️Developer watch: how community amenities are funded is about to change. Since forever, the City has waived rules for new developments – such as height, or increasing density – in return for developers paying for community benefits, like social housing or parks. In a sop to developers, the Province has decreed that the City must change how this is done, and the price developers pay may be no more that four per cent of the lands market value. Some community groups are arguing that things that benefit the entire city should not count, only things that benefit the local community. Developers themselves want some say in what those benefits are, presumably things that will help sell their development. Watch this space – it's sure to be an issue over the next year. [Ottawa Citizen]

▪️The monthly real estate stats are out and it's all up up up, especially outside of 'old' Ottawa. Bell's Corners has seen an increase of 39% over the past year, Carp has seen 27%. In town, Hintonburg has seen only a 4% increase in value.  [Ottawa Citizen]
