📋 Agenda

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

⚽ Soccer

Ottawa’s professional women’s soccer team now has a nameOttawa Rapid will play the inaugural season of the Northern Super League in spring 2025 at TD Place. Halifax, Montréal, Toronto, Calgary, and Vancouver also have teams in the league. (CBC)

🌊 Ottawa Beaches

  • Mooney’s Bay beach is closed today due to high levels of E. Coli but Petrie East Bay is open again. We didn’t intend on having a daily E. Coli update but it's proven necessary. (Daily Safety Report)

The NCC Riverhouse Swimming Dock is also deemed safe once more.

🌈 Capital Pride

  • Mayor Mark Sutcliffe says that he will not take part in Capital Pride-run events after the organization published its ‘Statement in Solidarity with Palestine’.

On Twitter, Sutcliffe said ‘I'm disappointed that despite conversations with the Jewish community, the board of Capital Pride has chosen to stand behind its original statement that caused significant hurt and distress for many members of the Jewish community. This decision by the board, days before the start of Pride, has unfortunately created an atmosphere where many now do not feel welcome to participate’.

The Mayor said that he would be attending other, non-Capital Pride organized events.

The mayor of Gatineau, Maude Marquis-Bissonnette, said that she would be attending her city’s Pride events, which are organized by a separate organization, Jeunesse Idem. Jeunesse Idem has not commented on the situation.

Capital Pride begins tomorrow and ends with a parade on the 25th.

(Joseph Tunney at CBC) (Capital Pride Statement)

🚨 211

  • The 211 Crisis Line has gone live. People who live in Centretown and Centretown West – bordered by the Ottawa River, the Rideau Canal, Highway 417, and Preston Street – can now call 211 instead of 911 if there is an emergency involving mental health. Unless police are required, a mental health professional or outreach worker will be dispatched. Should the system be successful, it may be rolled out citywide.  (Jocelyn Shepel at CBC)

⭐ Matthew Perry

  • The circumstances of the arrest of five people in connection with the death of the actor Matthew Perry are getting worse. Two of those charged are doctors, one was Perry’s personal assistant, and the other two are drug dealers. In arranging for a supply of ketamine, one of the doctors mused to one of the dealers about Perry, ‘I wonder how much this moron will pay’. As it turned out, US $55,000 for 20 vials. Perry attended Rockcliffe Park Public School and Ashbury College as a child. (Nathan Solis, Hannah Fry and Richard Winton in the Los Angeles Times)

🗑️ Cleaning the Capital campaign

  • Registration for the autumn Cleaning the Capital campaign begins today. Groups register to volunteer to clean parks, roadsides, or other public places and are supplied with waste bags and a disposal service. Over 42,000 people cleaned 33,000 kg of waste in 1,034 projects during the spring campaign. (City of Ottawa) (Cleaning the Capital webpage)

🏒 Men’s and women’s City Wide Sports Hockey League

  • Registration for the City Wide Sports Hockey League also begins today. Put your team together and register for play beginning October 2. The league is officiated and non-contact. Women’s teams are ages 18 years and up, men’s teams are 30 years and up. (City of Ottawa)

🐈 Ottawa Fire Services

  • A cat was rescued by firefighters of Station 36 after it crawled into the walls of an Orléans house. The cat, which, by its actions, is possibly a far-flung cousin of ottawan resident feline Wiggy, was missing for three days. It turns out to have crawled into the ceiling and fallen down a shaft in the wall. Firefighters used thermal imaging to find the moggy, who is otherwise fine, and, if it is anything like Wiggy, will immediately head back into the ceiling. (Alex Black at CityNews)

➕ Related  Ottawa Fire Service rescued a guy who drove his seadoo into the Deschenes Rapids and got stuck yesterday. Two rescue swimmers floated the seadoo and driver safely downriver.
