COVID-19 NEWS ⭕ Health Canada has officially approved the Pfizer and Moderna COVID 19 vaccines, joining the AstraZeneca vaccine which had been approved earlier. Before today, they had been used under emergency approval powers. The manufacturers have also given the vaccines brand names: Pfizer’s vaccine is Comirnaty, Moderna’s is Spikevax, andAstraZeneca’s is Vaxzevria. All those names are obviously eye-rolling terrible. WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT ▪️After 60 years, the venerable Robert Guertin Arena in Gatineau will see its last hockey game Saturday. The Gatineau Olympiques play host to the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies before moving to the brand new Slush Puppy Arena. The Robert Guertin will be demolished for housing. [Ottawa Sun] ▪️The former Saputo dairy may be redeveloped with six new towers. City staff have recommended the City approve the 1,900 unit development between the Queensway and the Carling Canadian Tire. The developers made a concession to the City by agreeing to not have all six towers exactly the same height, creating "a more dynamic and interesting skyline". [CBC] + Related City staff have also recommended that the National Capital Commission's plan to develop five embassies in Mechanicville be approved. Neighbours still hate it. ▪️The City has given a wish list to the National Capital Commission on LeBreton Flats development. The City would like a 2.5-hectare city park at Nepean Inlet with basketball and pickle ball courts, playgrounds and a splash pad, an outdoor skating rink, skateboard park, dog park, and community building. The City would also like daycare and affordable housing. [CBC] ▪️Sixty former interpreters who assisted the Canadian Armed Forces in Afghanistan have started a hunger strike on Parliament Hill.
