- In today’s lineup at the Ottawa Writers Festival, author Cat Bohannon’s Eve: How the Female Body Drove 200 Years of Human Evolution is a history of the evolution of the female body. The author discusses the research behind the book, which is described as ‘groundbreaking’ and ‘mythbusting’. Hosted by Sarah Everts.
Next, Sarah Everts sits down with professor Shohini Ghose, whose book Her Space, Her time: How Trailblazing Women Scientists Decoded the Hidden Universe discusses the many women scientists behind some of the world’s most important discoveries.
At 3:00 pm, the conversation shifts to the charting of the Earth’s ocean floor, an ongoing project by the world's scientists, investors, and military. Host Trish Audette-Longo speaks with environmental and ocean journalist Laura Trethewey about her publication The Deepest Map: The High-Stakes Race to Chart the World's Oceans.
The evening session starts with three novelists who explore the links and distances between our public and inner selves: Amy Stuart (A Death at the Party), Ashley Audrain (The Whispers), and Karma Brown (What Wild Women Do).
In the final session of the day, host Rhonda Douglas speaks with fiction writers Catherine Leroux (The Future) and Sean Michaels (Do You Remember Being Born?). - Vintage Pop-Up 613’s Mystic Market returns to Westboro for scarily fun shopping. It’s happening as part of the Wickedly Westboro event happening throughout the neighbourhood (see next item). More than 45 vendors will be selling the cool stuff, storyteller Jacqui Du Toit will be telling spooky tales, and EcoFauna will have animals on site to meet and learn about. It’s all happening from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm in two parking lots at the corner of Richmond and Churchill.
- The Wickedly Westboro Spooky Scavenger Hunt 2023 has taken over Richmond Road all month and this Saturday, the fun ramps up to include Trick or Treating stations for the kids. Some of the area’s businesses are also taking part; look for “Trick-or-Treaters Welcome” signs in shop windows. You’ll also see magician, a witch, a juggler, and a balloon artist. 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

- The Ottawa Writers Festival starts with a conversation with Newfoundland writers Donna Morrissey (Rage the Night) and Michael Crummey (The Adversary). The live event is sold out but you can watch online for $20.
Then, poet and author Rhonda Douglas hosts a chat with authors Claudia Day (Daughter) and Yasuko Thanh (To the Bridge) in a conversation about Family.
Then, three novelists speak about love and connection: Kate Heartfield (Valkyrie), Eva Crocker (Land of the Living), and Emma Donoghue (Learned by Heart).
The Cold War era is explored in Peter Schneider’s conversation with Jenny Erpenbeck (Kairos) and David Bergen (Away from the Dead).
