    QUOTE

    • Tell us a joke

    • – The request that Ottawa Sens scouts made to prospective players at the National Hockey League Scouting Combine in Buffalo last week.
    • Sens head coach Don Boyd said the tactic was to put players out of their comfort zone and see how they react. Very few of the dozens interviewed could come up with a joke on the spot and, of those that did, he didn’t find the jokes very funny.

    WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

🌜 ByWard Market is launching a ‘Night Ambassador’ programme to ‘assist drunk and vulnerable people’ on Saturday and Sunday nights. The job description says, ‘offer bystander intervention and de-escalation, help bar and restaurant patrons and employees find a safe ride home, talk to people about consent and harm reduction, connect people to emergency and social services and help people charge phones and get essentials like first aid and water’.

If this sound like you, it pays $25 per hour between 9:30 pm and 4 am and you must have ‘valid first and CPR qualifications and experience in medical, social services, community outreach and/or harm reduction’.

The Night Ambassadors launch June 27.  – Joanne Laucius in the Ottawa Citizen    ByWard Market District Authority Job Application [PDF]

The National Holocaust Monument on the Kichi Zibi Mikan was defaced overnight. The words ‘Feed Me’ were painted in red on the side. ‘A disgusting and cowardly act ’ said Conservative Party deputy leader Melissa Lantsman. Crews were cleaning it this morning. – Josh Pringle at CTV

🔥 The Ottawa Humane Society warns that pets are susceptible to the wildfire smoke just like humans. The Society advises keeping the windows closed and keeping cats off the catio. Dog walking should be quick and avoid running or jogging. ‘Pet birds are especially susceptible to smoke’, says the Society.  – Stittsville Central

↪ Also, it’s turtle egg laying season, so watch out for activity in sandy areas and for turtles crossing roads. Turtles prefer to lay eggs in early morning or sunset. – James Morgan in The Review

🎧  The latest Municipal Panel podcast from The 613 has dropped.  Neil Saravanamuttoo, Jon Willing, and Joanne Chianello discuss alcohol in parks, how the City is going to pay for its $11 billion infrastructure renewal gap, and whether there should be a referendum on Lansdowne. – The 613

🎸 The Ottawa Hard Rock Hotel and Casino has an official opening day finally: Thursday, July 3 at 1:00 pm. The refurbished and rebranded Rideau Carleton Casino will have 10 restaurants, bars and lounges, including the Hard Rock Café and Council Oak Steakhouse. – Josh Pringle at CTV

    DAILY POLL

    The Poll:

Last time, we asked ‘Will you be visiting an Open Doors Ottawa site this weekend?’

    31% Yes

    69% No

0% Not until my dream door is open

    Today’s Poll:

If your prospective employer asked you, could you come up with a joke on the spot?

If you answer ‘yes’, you really should email your joke to us at 'jokes@theottawan.com'

When Darren was working in England, his employer actually did ask him this question – although he already had the job. His joke:

‘Why can’t you find Tylenol in the jungle?’

    ‘Parrots eat ’em all.’

This is only funny if you know that paracetamol is the generic name for Tylenol. And it's not very funny even if you do know that.
