Sam Hersh of Horizon Ottawa writes us with the following regarding an item in yesterday’s ottawan:

‘In it you say “Campaigners Horizon Ottawa have been found to have violated campaign finance rules, according to an audit” as the headline but as the article states and the BDO audit report states these are only apparent contraventions, meaning that they have not been proven.’

• OC Transpo director of rail construction Michael Morgan is resigning this autumn. General manager Renée Amilcar says Morgan is leaving for other opportunities. Ottawa engineering director Richard Holder will take over the position until a new director is hired. (Elyse Skura at CBC)

🐴 Eastern Equine Encephalitis Virus

•  A horse in next door Lanark County has tested positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis Virus. While humans generally do not contract the virus from horses, they can from mosquitos transferring blood from a horse. The rare virus can cause serious neurological disease in humans, and while there is a vaccine for horses, there is none for people. (Toula Mazloum at CTV)

🏒 Ottawa Senators

•  The Sens' Hockeyville match will take place in Sudbury rather than Elliot Lake. Elliot Lake won the annual Hockeyville competition earlier in the year, receiving $250,000 for upgrade its arena, $10,000 worth of youth hockey equipment, and a match between the Ottawa Senators and the Pittsburgh Penguins. Unfortunately, the bill to reopen the Centennial Area is closer to $4 million and the small town match must be moved to the nearby bigger city. (Ottawa Citizen)

• 🆓 The NCC is holding a Public Archeological Dig at Leamy Lake Parkfrom 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, to search for pre-contact (before the arrival of Europeans) archeological artifacts. The area was used for more than 6,000 years with the main occupation dates of 1,000 to 2,000 years ago. Note: in case of heavy rain, thunderstorms, or excessive heat, the dig may be cancelled.

There has been a bold move in the Sens' back office. Ian Mendes, who has been the New York Times and Athletic correspondent for the Senators has been hired as vice president of communications. Sylvain St-Laurent, the now former media relations manager for Ottawa’s Professional Women's Hockey League team and a hockey writer for Le Droit for 20 years, is the new director of communications.
