HELLO OTTAWA

Weekend Plans

▪️Bank Street between Cooper St. and Slater St is closed March 11th through 13th for the free Fire & Ice Winter Exhibit, an interactive light and sound tour featuring seven video installations and projections. Purchase from participating businesses along the Fire & Ice Exhibit route and you’ll receive a ticket to be entered into a massive prize draw. Enjoy the show from 6:00pm to midnight on Friday and Saturday, and 6:00pm to 11:00pm on Sunday.

▪️Do you like hiking as well as sitting by the fire? Adventure Report offers a handy guide to the fire pits located along the trails in Gatineau Park. They’re stocked with wood by the NCC, so all you have to do is bring your lighter or matches and a fire starter like paper.

Saturday March 12th is Art and Found Day, when artists all over the ▪️world hide free art in their communities for residents to find. According to the Art and Found interactive map, at least 10 artists in Ottawa-Gatineau will be participating. If you’re spending the weekend outside of Ottawa, check the map for participating artists near you.

▪️Book now for a creative flower workshop in centrepieces or hand tie bouquets, from Roam Flora. Once per month June through September the solar-powered cut flower farm is offering three hour Harvest & Create experiences, which start with some instruction, followed by a wander through the fields to pick your flowers and foliage. Finally, you’ll create your centrepiece or hand tied bouquet. $150. 107 Mantil Side Road, off Upper Dwyer Hill Road.

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

▪️Walmart’s Baseline store has been closed since Sunday after someone set off a fire extinguisher. The person was arrested but the store, which has a large grocery section, is struggling over what has and hasn't been contaminated. [Ottawa Citizen]

▪️The City has opened applications for small-scale, community-based grants that support an environmentally sustainable Ottawa.. The Community Environmental Projects Grant Programme has $52,000 to spend, with the average grant in the past being around $3,200. The criteria is pretty open – environmental sustainability – but they won't fund existing budgets, debts, or even refreshements. Deadline is March 31. [City of Ottawa]

▪️Permits for residents who want to rent out their properties short term – like on AirBNB – are now available. Under a new bylaw, anyone who offers up their residence for a short-term let must have a permit from the City. The permit limits rentals to two per bedroom and anyone who doesn't own their property must have written permission from the property owner. Everyone must be registered by April 1. [City of Ottawa]

▪️NarCity has 11 hidden gems of Ottawa that locals don't want anyone to know about.  They are: Rockcliffe Lookout, Princess Louise Falls, Morrison's Quarry, Bate Island, John Ceprano Rock Sculptures, Eagles Nest Lookout, Pinhey Sand Dunes, Parliament Hill Lookout, Corktown Footbridge, and Chaudiere Falls. Now you know. [NarCity Ottawa
