HELLO OTTAWA

We don’t want to set the cat amongst the pigeons but the Ottawa Kitten Rescue is in dire need of donations and foster homes.

They are short of people to look after moggies until they are ready to adopt. If you think you have the ability to foster a kitten then hand it back, click here.

Ottawa Rescue Kittens is also $20,000 behind on their vet bills and could use some support. If you’d like to give the Kitten rescue a donation, click here

Correction Reader Rhys says our comment yesterday that Carl Haworth, captain of Atlético Ottawa, had been playing with the team for six years was incorrect. He has been playing for Ottawa for six years, yes, but five were with the defunct Ottawa Fury before joining Atlético last year.

    📋 Agenda

    WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

    💰 Lansdowne 2.0

🔹 The City is proposing the Property Tax Uplift, in which 90 per cent of Lansdowne property tax will pay for the debt and not go to city services like snow clearing, public transit, and policing which will be subsidized by the rest of the public.

🔹 Lansdowne 2.0’s plan looks at the financial benefit of adding 59K sq. ft. of retail rather than the viability of retail operations in total.

🔹 There has been no consideration of the impact on Lansdowne if a new Sens arena is built in LeBreton Flats.

🔹 The City’s Auditor General has started her audit of Lansdowne but the City wants to make a decision before her report is published.

    (Old Ottawa South) (PDF version)

    •  The Glebe, Old Ottawa East and Old Ottawa South Community Associations have done their homework and jointly released an eye-opening financial fact sheet about Lansdowne 2.0.

Intended for City councillors, some of the highlighted facts are:

🔹 The City will spend $333M on Lansdowne 2.0 and take on upwards of $239M of new debt, which the City is liable for if the projections don’t work out

🔹 The City currently has $100 million of debt on the books from Lansdowne 1.0, plus $46 million in guarantees of other Lansdowne debt, and the $120 million retail loan.

    🏒 The Sens

    •  Billionaire Torontonian Michael Andlauer is officially the owner of the Ottawa Senators hockey team. The National Hockey League board of governors approved the purchase last night, clearing the last hurdle. The first pre-season game is Sunday at the Canadian Tire Centre against Toronto. (CTV)

    🛻 Convoy on Trial

Convoy co-organizers Chris Barber and Tamara Lich are currently on trial for their parts in the Convoy siege. We’ll mention when something interesting happens.

    •  The defence says notes taken by Kim Ayotte, Ottawa's manager of emergency and protective services, show that the City was considering allowing trucks to remain on Wellington Street indefinitely, as part of the deal brokered by then-mayor Jim Watson to move trucks from residential areas.

Ayotte, Barber, other City staff and police ordered pizza for their meeting. (Laura Osman in the Canadian Press)
    •  The Ottawa Citizen is liveblogging the trial.

The Professional Women’s Hockey League changed all their social media logos yesterday, with each city brandishing a unique colour seemingly linked to a historic team. Ottawa’s is a sort of maroon. The Hockey News ran down the history of historic women’s hockey team names in the original six cities: Ottawa Alerts (1930s), Montréal Royals (1930s), Toronto Pats (1929), St. Nicholas Blues and Manhattan Reds (1916 New York), Back Bay Hockey Club (1917 Boston), and Minnesota Whitecaps (2004).
