The Ottawan

HELLO OTTAWA

Storm Resources

For the eighth day, the remaining homes without power will be powered up by tomorrow. About 8,000 homes are still without power after last week’s storm.

The City is converting some of the emergency centres into Community Support Centres. Each centre will have representatives from:

  • By-law and Regulatory Services
  • Ottawa Public Health
  • Community and Social Services
  • Building Code Services
  • Canadian Red Cross
  • Insurance Bureau of Canada

Besides information related to general insurance, housing and financial services, building and demolition permit requirements and processes, public health, and psychosocial support, each location has charging stations for electronic devices, showers, and washrooms.

The locations are:

  • CARDELREC Recreation Complex Goulbourn (1500 Shea Road)
  • François Dupuis Recreation Complex (2263 Portobello Boulevard)
  • Howard Darwin Centennial Arena (1765 Merivale Road)
  • Hunt Club-Riverside Park Community Centre (3320 Paul Anka Drive)

The Howard Darwin Centennial Arena and Hunt Club-Riverside Park Community Centre also has food until tomorrow evening.

Eventful Monday

▪️Starting today you can get the full schedule of Doors Open Ottawa, the celebration of Ottawa’s heritage architecture unfolding on June 4th and 5th. You’ll have to register to access some of the buildings, and some are participating via virtual tours only, but otherwise you can walk in during the event’s hours.

▪️OrKidstra returns with a free live event featuring over 100 young musicians, on Wednesday (June 1st) at the Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre, 355 Cooper Street. Donations are welcome.

▪️Small Pony Barrel Works has launched A Lonely Forest 2022, a “spontaneously fermented” golden sour wheat beer promising a note of browned apple and a very slight bitterness. Sounds lovely for a picnic.

Deal of the day

▪️Bkind is offering products with slightly unsightly packaging, at reduced prices. They say there’s nothing wrong with the products inside.

▪️Get an extra 20% off already reduced items in the Knix Last Call sale, ending tonight. Enter the code EXTRA20 at checkout to receive the discount.

▪️Just in time for outdoor dining, get up to 40% off site wide at Solo Stoves. Fire pits, accessories, camp stoves, and bundles are all included. The sale ends tonight.

▪️Enjoy 40% off cozy and stylish items by Dames de Pique, including a dress, oversized joggers, and plenty of tees in men’s and women’s sizes.

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

▪️The City’s Planning Committee decides that razing 100 units of  affordable housing for a new O Train line is a bad idea, moves the line. The Planning Committee previously approved destroying lower-rent apartments at Manor Village and Cheryl Gardens because existing major utilities made it inconvenient. Some City worker figured out they could raise the new Barrhaven Stage 3 route over the utililies and made the recommendation. The decision will now go to the full council over whether it is a good idea to raze 100 lower-rent apartments.  [City of Ottawa
