    OTTAWAN OF THE DAY

    • Marcelo Muñoz

    • Standing at an Ottawa food truck waiting for a churro, the pharmacist and chemist in the Ottawa Heart Institute’s BioEngineering and Therapeutic Solutions realized that the way the machine squeezed out the dough through a nozzle around a hollow tube could solve a problem his team was working on: how to bioengineer a blood vessel for use in cardiac surgery.

    WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

⚡ City Council has given its blessing for a battery storage system in West Carleton. While the City’s Agriculture and Rural Affairs committee unanimously voted against supporting the system last week, two of the four members, Orléans South-Navan Ward ward councillor Catherine Kitts and Orléans East-Cumberland ward councillor Matthew Luloff, Orléans East-Cumberland voted for it this round.

The vote does not mean approval as the system still needs to successfully navigate the planning process, but support from the local municipality is a requirement by the Independent Electricity System Operator. – Mitchell Beer in The Energy Mix

↪ Campaigners have found that an engineer who presented safety data about battery energy storage systems to the Agriculture and Rural Affairs committee last week had his registration cancelled in British Columbia after an admission ‘that he demonstrated professional misconduct’.

🛻 IK Royal Towing and two drivers are facing charges after being accused of towing to a destination against the owner’s wishes and causing damage. A driver is alleged to have said that they had a contract with the Ontario Provincial Police, and they were told to tow the car to the Collision Reporting Centre. The company does not have a contract with the Police. – Natasha O'Neill at CityNews

🛂  The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg has opened an embassy in Ottawa for the first time. Although ambassador Jean Claude Kugener has been in town since January, the new embassy is now open in an office building on Queen Street. Canada is the only G7 country that does not have an embassy in Luxembourg.  – Dylan Robertson in the Canadian Press

🛒 Every week, @stromanker reads all the grocery flyers and posts the deals on Ottawa Reddit. Some deals this week: ‘French’ steaks $5.88/lb at Metro Cité des Jeunes, watermelon $3.88/ea at No Frills, and brick cheese (Saputo Mozzarellissima) $5.50/500g at Maxi.  – /Ottawa

    DAILY POLL

    The Poll:

Last time, we asked ‘What kind of pizza do you prefer?’

31% Ottawa style: thick base, lots of cheese over the toppings

52% ‘Authentic’ style: thin base, minimal toppings and cheese

2% Chain style: Like Pizza Pizza, Pizza Hut, Little Caesar’s

15% If I believe in anything, it’s that all pizza is good pizza

THE OTTAWAN is somewhat surprised at this result as the number of pizzerias making Ottawa Style vs ‘Authentic’ style has to be something like 20 to 1.

    BUT, ONE MORE THING ...

Sens superfans Silver Seven have a list of the players about whom they have been disappointed this year.

But at least their eyes are wide open about it: ‘let's cast unfair judgement on young children literally just chasing their dreams’.
