The Poll

Yesterday, we asked ‘Have you skated on the Rideau Canal Skateway this year?’ and, to be honest, the ‘yes’ vote was higher than we expected.

41% Yes

54% No

5% Yes, but only if eating a Beavertail counts as ‘skating’

Today’s question: Inspired by this blog post by local realtor Matt Richling (about trends in Ottawa home ownership), let’s ask something that gets you where you live:

We welcome any comments ‘hello@theottawan.com’.

    WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

    💰 Tariffs

    ❄️ Snow Plowing

    •  Hey City Councilors, how do you decide what streets are plowed first? Councillors: Gosh, we dunno. Kichissippi ward councillor Jeff Leiper and Somerset ward councillor Ariel Troster have written an open letter to City staff  asking that very question.

Ted Raymond at CTV    The Letter

➕ Related Orléans West-Innes ward councillor Laura Dudas says Twitter is ‘very negative’ and wants the City to stop posting on it.

    🏠 Work from Home

    •  The village of Elizabethtown-Kitley, near Brockville, will discuss ending ‘work from home’ privileges. Councillor Earl Brayton, who is bringing up the question to council, says he wants ‘this foolishness — as far as I'm concerned —over with’.

According to LinkedIn, the village has 24 employees.

      Martin Halek at CBC

    🎓 Algonquin College

    •  Algonquin College has officially decided to close its Perth campus, and to cut 41 programmes. The college fears that without the cancellations, it will lose $93 million by 2026-2027. The Perth campus will close in 2026.

      Nathan Fung at CBC

    🏒 Hockeyville

    •  Almonte has put itself forward as a candidate for the 2025 Hockeyville. The annual event is run by Kraft Heinz and awards the most sincere hockey arena $250,000 in upgrades as well as the promise of a pre-season NHL match. We previously mentioned that St. Isidore, east of Ottawa has also thrown its puck into the, uh, ring.

You can visit Almonte’s video rally page here.
