    WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

    💰 Development Charges

    •  The City’s Planning and Housing committee has approved charges for new developments but at less than half the rate staff originally recommendedThe fee charged to new developments to pay for roads, schools, parks, sewers, etc. was originally set to increase 28 per cent but was approved at 11 per cent. Staff handwaved some math about how much growth will occur in Ottawa to come up with the 11 per cent figure. (Elyse Skura in the Ottawa Citizen)

    🚗 Parking Tickets

    •  City Councillor suggests that parking tickets should be sliding scale on value of the carCapital ward coucillor Shawn Menard points out that parking tickets fines are hard on people who cannot afford it but are more like a parking fee to someone with lots of money. The City takes over parking ticket fines from the Province next year. (Arthur White-Crummey at CBC)

Related Menard was speaking fines based on the value of the car, but in Finland fines are a sliding scale based on income. One businessman, caught doing 65 km/h in a 50 km/h zone, was fined €54,000 ($79,645).

    🛒 Shopify

    •  Local mom-and-pop business Shopify has made a surprise loss in the first three months of this year. The Centretown company collected US $1.86 billion in revenue for the Jan - Mar period, an increase of US 23 per cent over the same period last year but still lost US $273 million. While still headquartered in Ottawa, chief executive Tobias Lütke has moved to Toronto and president Harley Finkelstein lives in Montréal. (Betakit)

    📅 Federal Public Employees

    •  Public Employee unions are livid over the three-days-in-the-office order by the Federal government. The Public Service Alliance of Canada, the Canadian Association of Professional Employees, the Association of Canadian Financial Officers, and the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada have all said that they will be filing formal complaints that the order violates the collective agreements. President of the Treasury Board, Anita Anana, says ‘A hybrid work environment is not within the collective agreements’. (CBC)

    🔥 Heat Map

    •  Ottawa Public Health has created a "cool map" for people to find respite after heat warnings this summer. Heat warnings are issued if the daytime temperature is at least 30° or the humidex is 40° or more.
