HELLO OTTAWA

  • Word has come down that the Federal government is looking to dump 24 Sussex Drive as the official residence of the Prime Minister and rebuild elsewhere.
  • The empty official residence has been overrun with rodents and needs millions in infrastructure updates. The Mounties are also concerned that the house is too close to the road and the river for proper security.
  • Suggested new locations are Rockcliffe Park or a site near the Mounties’ musical ride training ground further east.
  • the ottawan suggests killing two birds with one stone and building it on Sparks Street, helping to revitalize downtown and finally encouraging people back to Sparks.

    🖼️ National Gallery of Canada

    •  A Tom Thompson painting at the National Gallery has had paint thrown upon it in the name of fighting climate change. A member of the On2Ottawa group threw paint onto Thomson’s 1914-15 painting ‘Northern River’. The painting was protected by glass. Before he was arrested, the throwee glued himself to the floor.  On2Ottawa wants a national firefighting agency to combat the rising number of wildfires. (Ted Raymond at CTV) 

    ⚡ Electric Buses

      •  The City’s Auditor General has reviewed the contract with Hydro Ottawa over new charging stations for electric buses. Nathalie Gougeon found that because the contract had no fixed price, the overall cost could be higher and may not be the best deal for the City. Also, the contract lacks technical details requiring the City to hire or contract appropriate expertise to proper monitor the supplier.       ⚙️ Mathieu Fleury

      •  Former Rideau-Vanier ward councillor Mathieu Fleury has been hired as the new chief administrative officer for Cornwall. Fleury was an Ottawa councillor for 12 years. (Cornwall Seaway News)

      🚊  O Train

      •  The City’s Light Rail Sub-Committee received updates on the east, west, and south extensions.
         
      • - East: Track and systems continue to be built, vehicle testing is expected by the end of the year

        - West: All stations are now under construction, a tunnel is in the process of being dug

        - South: Station building is well advanced, with signage and fare gates now being installed. Handover to OC Transpo is expected in autumn

      🏠 Real Estate

      •  This Manotick house sold for $13,000 under it's asking price. The asking price was $988,000. Look, the Globe & Mail thought this item was worthy of mention, so don’t hold it against us. (Sydnia Yu in the Globe & Mail)

      🌉  Union Bridge at the Chaudière Crossing

      •  The reopening of the Union Bridge at the Chaudière Crossing has been delayed until September 29.  A single southbound lane will reopen first on September 13. The bridge has been closed since March 2022. (CBC)
