The Ottawan

HELLO OTTAWA

It’s Tuesday, July 26, 2022 and we’re looking at the 200 year Sikh history in Canada, up now at the Ottawa Sikh Society Gurdwara in Nepean.

▪️If you’ve been putting off ordering a necklace or pair of earrings from Ottawa’s Birch Jewelry, take note that they’ll be on vacay from July 30 to August 7. Order by July 30 latest if you need something to arrive soon.

▪️SPAO is taking registrations for in-person part time fall courses in digital photography, dark room techniques, and lighting.

Tonight

▪️Canadian duo Junk and Young Stitch present the Lions Eat Goats & Sounds Made Up tour, tonight 7:00pm at Cafe Dekcuf. $15 plus fees. 221 Rideau St.

▪️It’s Trivia Tuesday at Broadhead Beer, starting at 6:30pm. But it’s not all fun and games; the taproom has seriously yummy offerings like Beer Cheese Dip, a Buffalo Chicken Wrap, and Meaty Mac. 1680 Vimont Art, Unit 106, Orléans.

▪️Aurelius Fine Oils & Balsamics is looking for a bottling and sales assistant to fill a 30 hours per week position. $16/hr. Think of the knowledge you’ll amass about fine oils and balsamic. Send your resumé to mike@aureliusfineoils.com.

Deals of the day

▪️Until August 10, get between 20% and 30% off regular prices at Cokluch. Summer pants, shorts, skirts, and tops for women and babies are included in the sale.

▪️Grab a stylish, Canadian-made men’s T-shirt, henley, or even a jacket in the 18 Waits sale.

▪️We spotted some great pieces in the Message Factory Summer Sale, such as the Gabrielle sleeveless dress in navy ($82), Austin fleece shorts ($29), and the Calla organic cotton capri in truffle ($56).

We'll see you tomorrow. – Martha and Darren

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

▪️Shopify is laying off 1,000 employees, 10 per cent of its workforce. Shopify says that it is feeling the effects of an economic slowdown. Laid-off employees will will get 16 weeks of severance pay, an extra week for every year they've been with the company, and get to keep their stock options. The company says the lay offs will come from the recruiting, support, and sales departments. [CBC]

▪️After asking hundreds of residents what they want in a new police chief, the hiring agency says that person doesn't exist. Hefid Solutions sifted through 1,400 responses on the online survey and interviewed representatives of community organizations. The report does reflect a desire for a perfect person but does include these two insights: ‘Most participants said Police should only be allowed to do what they have been trained to do. Most of the time, mental health calls are not within their training mandate’ and ‘Solutions to most of the problems facing OPS now lie outside the service itself, but it would take a humble leader to ask for help.’ [Ottawa Citizen] [The Report (PDF)]

+ Related Get ready: It appears acting police chief Steve Bell is preparing to ask for more money for the police after last year's less-than-requested increase

+ Related The Ottawa Police Service has renewed its contract to run the 911 service for Ottawa. By provincial law, the City of Ottawa is responsible for running a 911 service. The City delegated it to the Ottawa Police Service to run in 1988.

▪️Don’t swim at Petrie Island East Bay and Britannia says Ottawa Public Health. It's because of a cotton candy spill from a nearby factory. No, of course not. It's E. Coli. It's always E. Coli. [Ottawa Citizen]

▪️Repairs to the lightning-struck O Train will take days. A small portion in the West will keep running but the majority of the Confederation Line is out of service after 900 metres of an overhead power line was downed by lightning Sunday. A bus replacement service is running and the Federal Transportation Safety Board has been notified. [CBC]

▪️Convoy co-organizer Tamara Lich gets out on bail once again. Lich was arrested for allegedly breaching her previous bail by posing for a photo with another co-organizer. The judge let her out this time on more stringent communication conditions and the sense that she probably has already spent more time in jail than she would if she was convicted. [CBC]
