| OTTAWAN OF THE DAY | Melanie Chisamore | - Chisamore is the great-great-great-great-granddaughter of Jane Elizabeth Martin Barnes, aka the fortune teller ‘Mother Barnes’. Chisamore’s work keeps the memory of ‘Mother Barnes’ alive, telling the story of the Witch of Plum Hollow. Even now, people still place quarters on Barnes’ grave, the price she charged in the 1800s for readings. | | Sarah r at CBCKeste |

| 🤫 Ottawa City Council | ▪️City Council has voted to move ahead with a plans for a bylaw to ban protests in certain areas. Council directed City staff to investigate writing a bylaw that would ‘protect schools, places of worship, and other sensitive community sites from strident, possibly violent protests’. Capital ward councillor Shawn Menard was one of only three councillors who voted against the plan on free speech grounds. ‘There’s a real risk that, if we allow this to expand, the civic spaces that everyone in Canada can use to speak up and dissent and express ideas, will slowly shrink’, he said. | | Blair Crawford in the Ottawa Citizen |
