COVID-19 NEWS

⭕ Today is the second anniversary of the World Health Organization declaring COVID-19 a pandemic.

⭕ The acting manager of the Ottawa’s Design and Construction Branch says contractors to City projects have less vaccinated workers than average, despite the mandatory vaccine policy. Nontheless, he says the City will be flexible and find a way to let them work. [Ottawa Construction News]

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

▪️The Iconic Café has been evicted. from its Slater Street location. The café had been accused of supporting the Trucker siege and allowing leaders to broadcast from inside. The owner has so far raised $30,000 from supporters. [CBC]

▪️City councillor who resigned from Library board for spilling secrets is alleged to have given private info from Police Board. The publisher of Ottawa Life magazine, who is being sued by former police chief Peter Sloly, filed an affidavit testifying that Gloucester-South Nepean ward councillor Carol Anne Meehan gave him confidential information while she was on the Police Board. Meehan has since resigned from that, too. [CBC]

▪️The Transportation Safety Board says the Barrhaven train crossing is safe. The board had been investigating Jockvale Crossing after a man was killed by a train in February. The City authorized an underpass in 2019 but nothing has since gone forward. [Barrhaven Independent]

▪️Two Ottawa Police officers have resigned over the tow truck kickback scheme. The two officers resigned after two years of paid suspension. The kickback scheme involved the officers assigning certain tow truck companies to handle traffic accidents, in exchange for a fee. [Ottawa Citizen
