HELLO OTTAWA

Food + Drink Update: Patios & Donuts

It’s the patio season and two local restaurants have made Open Table’s 100 Best Outdoor Dining Restaurants in Canada for 2022 list: Bar Lupulus and Riviera.

But Ottawa has no shortage of outdoor dining spots, both in the city and in the Valley. Get out there and enjoy yourself.

▪️The patio at Joe’s Italian Kitchen in Almonte is now open for the season. Overlooking a waterfall, Joe’s has one of the best views in the Valley. You can also eat outside at the Wellington West location (no waterfall though).

▪️The creative menus, cocktails, and casual vibe make Sandy Hill’s Working Title Kitchen a very good choice for patio dining.

▪️Come for a cocktail from the “Golden Hour” menu (3:00pm to 5:00pm) and stay for the Southeast Asian-inspired, family style sharing menu at Sidedoor. The patio is now open.

▪️You don’t have to be a cycling enthusiast to enjoy Bike Cafe’s Spark Street patio, but if you do bring your bike, you can get a tune-up while you savour your croissant. You’ll also get in some superb people watching. 70 Sparks Street.

▪️In addition to full menu of chicken sandwiches, Holly’s Hot Chicken has Caramel Peanut Butter Donuts today, for $4 each or six for $20. We just thought you should know. Open until 8:00pm at 45 Armstrong Street in Mechanicsville.

▪️Ogham Craft Spirits micro-distillery in Kanata has been selling their hooch in maple syrup bottles due to a shortage of glass.

▪️The Citizen reckons that you'll enjoy new fish house Le Poisson Bleu as long as you accept that ‘top-tier and even avant-garde seafood is to be celebrated in relaxed surroundings’.

Gigs

Emmylou Harris & The Red Dirt Boys, Wynton Marsalis, Kamasi Washington, and Blue Rodeo are but a few of the headliners at the 2022 TD Ottawa Jazz Festival(June 24-July 3). Gold, Bronze, Youth & Day Passes are on sale now.

COVID-19 NEWS

⭕ University of Ottawa law professor Amir Attaran has filed a private prosecution against Premier Doug Ford for breaking quarantine rules during a Ottawa Hospital visit. According to Federal law, Ford was required to keep his mask on for 14 days after returning from a trip to Washington, DC. Ford had taken his mask off to give a speech about dropping mask requirements. Private prosecutions allow a citizen to take a person to court for a criminal action if the Crown declines to do so. They rarely occur, even more rarely get to judgement, and can by put on hold by Crown prosecutors. [Ottawa Citizen]

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

▪️Neither the acting chief of the Ottawa Police nor the RCMP asked for the Emergency Act to be invoked. In front of the joint Parliamentary committee investing the invocation of the act to clear the Trucker siege, both acting chief Steve Bell and RCMP commissioner Commissioner Brenda Lucki testified that neither of them asked for the authority to act, giving the impression that they both would be content with leaving the City in the hands of the Truckers. [CBC

▪️Emails show that the Ottawa Police quashed a plan by the National Capital Commission to clear the Truckers from Confederation Park. The Commission owns Confederation Park, which had been taken over by the Trucker siege as a staging ground. On February 4, the Commission informed that they would be clearing the park the next day, a plan that the Ottawa Police cancelled at nearly 3 am. [CBC]

▪️Your garbage and recycling collection calendar is in the post. You should receive it soon but if you can't wait, you can download a PDF. That same link lets you sign up for an email alert that will tell you every week when to put out your rubbish, to our delight. It also works with your calendar programme. [City of Ottawa

+ Related The City also suggests checking out your local Buy Nothing Facebook Community where you can offer up your junk to become your neighbours’ treasure. Here's a list of the communities in Canada. (Ottawa has over a dozen.)
