WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT ▪️Ottawa Police Services requests a 2.9 per cent increase in its budget. That works out to an extra $14 million for a total budget of $346.5 million. The Police say that they will not hire 30 officers as planned. [CTV] + Related The Ottawa Public Library is looking for a 4 per cent increase in its budget, for a total of $56.6 million. The money would be used to extend Sunday openings, expand online services, and buy furniture for the new main library. + Related The City of Ottawa is proposing a 3 per cent increase in property taxes. In Ottawa, the library is included in the property tax but police services and transit services are taxed separately (but printed on the same bill) ▪️The Province has threatened to hold back $60 million of transit funding over the Confederation Line derailment. The Ministry of Transportation writes that the money will only be dispersed after proof that the City has done everything requested by the Federal Transportation Safety Board and that an independent engineer sign off on the return to service. The $60 million is part of a Province-wide grant of money to transit systems whose revenue was hard hit by the pandemic. [CTV] ▪️Did Al Capone run the illicit booze business in Manotick? Did he also live in a cabin in Renfrew County? It's a tale, all right. Lockett's restaurant, formerly Manotick 360, formerly Oggi’s, formerly the Manotick Tea Room was the site of – allegedly – a vault that supplied illicit booze to the Palace Hotel across the street via – a very real – tunnel under the street during prohibition. J Edgar Hoover was also a visitor to Osgoode, visiting his cousin. [Mannotick Messenger] |
