HELLO OTTAWA

Last summer, many swim classes and open pool sessions were cancelled because of the lack of lifeguards.

This year, the City is trying something we have not seen before: trying to attract older people as lifeguards.

It's a novel concept, so novel you might want to try it yourself.

    • A journalist overlayed a map of the last civic election with the boundaries of the City before amalgamation in 2000. The areas that were once outside the City limits – rural and suburban – voted Mark Sutcliffe by high margins. However, the wards that were in pre-almagamated Ottawa largely voted Catherine McKenney, who would have won. (Amy Oldfield in The Leveller)

    •  Ottawa Centre Member of Parliament Yasir Naqvi is considering a run for leadership of the Ontario Liberal Party. Naqvi, who is a member of the Federal Liberals says people around him are encouraging him to run. The Ontario Liberals are currentlyleaderless after incurring their worst ever vote tally running against Doug Ford last Autumn. (CBC)

    📔 National Arts Cente

    • International press coverage has caused the National Arts Centre to change its mind about Black-only evenings. The Centre had scheduled a Black audience-only night on February 17 for the play, Is God Is. After coverge from the UK Telegraph and NY Post, the  Centre has changed the night to ‘an open invitation to Black-identifying audiences’ and ‘[e]veryone is welcome at all our shows’.

      In an internal email, the Centre’s CEO Christopher Deacon says about Black Out nights: ‘This initiative is an important step forward in the NAC’s work in diversity and inclusion. Research in Canada has identified the number one barrier to participation at theatres and arts centres: “It’s not for someone like me.” If we want to serve Canadians by engaging them in the performing arts, we must work to remove that barrier.’

      In a 2021 production, The Guardian gave Is God Is four stars (out of five), quipping it was ‘Tarantinoesque bloodshed meets Greek tragedy in Aleshea Harris’s daring drama about a voyage of vengeance’.
