  • Reader Scott wrote us and pointed out that we screwed up yesterday’s item about new cocktail bar Bar Ocelli’s aim to be on Canada’s Best Bar list. Most egregiously, we said that Ottawa had not made the list in seven years. Scott points out Sidecar on Preston Street made the list in 2023, a feat made possible by then-Sidecar-bartender Witek Wojaczek, owner of Bar Ocelli.

    WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

    🚨 Ottawa City Council

    •  A man has been charged with threatening a City Councillor because she is Francophone. Rideau-Vanier ward councillor Stéphanie Plante received a series of threatening emails from a person who provided their contact details and specifically mentioned that she was Francophone. A 47 year-old man has been charged with uttering threats and harassment. (Nathan Fung at CBC)

    🛻 Convoy News

    •  A medical resident who promoted himself as a licensed doctor to Convoy participants has been suspended. During the Convoy occupation, Jeremiah Hadwen set up a clinic for participants, charging fees and accepting donations for medical procedures that he was not authorized to give. (David Fraser at CBC)

    ✏️ Commemorative Names

    •  The Community Services Committee has approved a new policy for naming, and renaming, streets, buildings, and parks. The new policy would create a new committee that would receive suggestions that recognize local residents, local groups, significant events. Names recommended by the Anishinabe Algonquin nation will be prioritized as will names recognizing those ‘who have experienced systematic barriers that exclude them from full participation and benefits in social, economic and political life, including Indigenous Peoples, Racialized People, Persons with Disabilities, 2SLGBTQQIA+, Francophones,
      and Women’. The full council will need to approve the policy for it to go into effect. (Arthur White-Crummey at CBC) (The Policy)

    🚨 Ottawa Police Service

    •  The Ottawa Police Service is renewing calls for information on an unsolved 2017 murder outside Rideau Street nightclub. Ashton Dickson was shot in front of as many as a dozen people after an altercation at Mingle Bar in 2017. There is currently a $75,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. Police ask for anyone with information to call 613 236 1222 ext 5477 or anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1 800 222 8477. (William Eltherington at CTV)
