Lynn Saxberg The reporter at the Ottawa Citizen took one for all of us when she went for a swim in Dow’s Lake at the new National Capital Commission dock. She liked it, rating it higher than Westboro, Britannia, and Mooney’s Bay beaches, but not as good as the River House. She also said that she took a shower as soon as she could. She’s not crazy. A reader in the Citizen comments said that Westerners would call Dow’s Lake a ‘slough’, which explains to Vancouver-boy Darren the reason that people in Ottawa are so leery about swimming here. - ‘How I learned to stop worrying and love swimming in Dow's Lake’

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT |
❓ The National Capital Commission has some questions for you about the new bridge that would connect Aviation Parkway to Montée Paiement in Gatineau. It has launched a new online survey, asking the public to share its thoughts on the project’s early planning and design principles. – National Capital Commission ↪ Also just asking questions is Italian Week Ottawa, which is looking for your opinions about next year's festival. One lucky survey taker will receive a gift certificate from Lee Valley. 🏗️ Wellington Street around the Parliament buildings will be closed from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am most nights for the next few weeks. The closures are related to the massive Parliament precinct renovations, and in particular, Block 2, the collection of heritage buildings across the street from Parliament. CityNews did the hard work of noting the dates and times of the closures: - Westbound closure only – June 23 to 26, nightly from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.
- Full closure – July 2 to 3, nightly from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. (reopening July 4)
- Full closure – July 4 to 6, closing on Friday at 6 p.m. and reopening on Monday, July 7 at 6 a.m.
- Full closure – July 7 to 9, nightly from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. (reopening July 10)
- Full closure – July 14 to 15, nightly from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. (reopening July 16)
- Full closure – July 21 to 24, nightly from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. (reopening July 25)
- Full closure – July 25 to 27, closing on Friday at 6 p.m. and reopening on Monday, July 28, 6 a.m.
- Eastbound closure only – July 28 to 31, nightly from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. (reopening August 1)
– Natasha O’Neill at CityNews ⚖️ A former member of an Ottawa Carleton District School Board committee is suing the district for $4.5 million. Last February, the Board removed Monique Manatch from the Indigenous Education Committee that she had chaired for eight years. At the time, the Board said that the removal was due to complaints of harassment, but Manatch says in her statement of claim that she was removed – partly – because of a policy she developed to prevent resources being used by ‘individuals fraudulently claiming Indigenous identity’. Manatch is also asking to be reinstated and for an accounting of expenses intended for indigineous education. None of the allegations of the parties have been proven in court. – Joanne Laucius in the Ottawa Citizen 🎟️ Ottawa Tourism has launched the Visit Ottawa Pass. For $100, you get a one-time free admission to any five out for ten participating museums. Pair it with the Canada Strong pass, which gives free admission to under 17s to many of the same museums, and families can once again visit the national museums at an affordable rate. The Visit Ottawa Pass also has discounts to a selection of restaurants and museum gift shops. – Visit Ottawa Pass
🙏 The design of the national monument to Canada’s mission in Afghanistan has been approved by the National Capital Commssion. Two changes were made: stairs were removed and replaced with a ramp for accessibilty and the monument has been shifted slightly to make a clear view of the Peace Tower. The monument will be located on Booth Street, across from the Canadian War Museum. – Matteo Cimellaro in the Ottawa Citizen National Monument page |

Former prime minister Stephen Harper’s old director of communications, Andrew MacDougall, has a solution to the knotty issue of where the prime minister should live. He says Rideau Hall ticks all the boxes that a refurbished or rebuilt 24 Sussex would have regarding security and event space. ‘[I]t’s time to boot the GG out of Rideau Hall’, he writes. - The Governor General could move into the prime minister’s country home, Harrington Lake, or the Speaker’s residence, The Farm, in Gatineau park, or we could build something nice at 24 Sussex.
- Although protocol would say that a head of government kicking out the head of state’s representative is just not done, MacDougall has a rebuttal to that: Canadians don’t care about that kind of thing.
