WEDNESDAY DINING + DRINKING UPDATE |
🥕 The Farm Store at BeetBox Farm has new summer hours: Fridays 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm and Saturdays 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Visit the farm to pick up fresh, local produce for the week. 🍽️ In Apartment 613’s Best Bites column, Kiersten Vuorimaki ate at Casa México (The ‘mole was nutty and complex, with a hint of spice topped with tangy pickled onions’), The Clarendon Tavern (‘’I’ll be thinking about that meal for a long time), and Exit Lounge, located in the old Ottawa Citizen building (‘I’m here to tell you that we were not expecting to have such an amazing meal’). Vuorimaki was also happy with new Côte d’Ivoire street food resto, Baguette Brochette. ‘French influences of the baguette and beignets, but that the spices and ingredients are common across most of Africa’. is the vibe. 🥪 At Eat the Strip, Ameya Charnalia finds superior sarnies at Farmer's Pick, inside a small grocer next to a passport office. ‘And at just under ten dollars, it feels like theft’. 🥯 In the Ottawa Citizen, Sofia Misenheimer did a tasting tour of the Capital’s Montréal-style bagelries: Kettlemans, Bobino, Cadmans, and Bagelshop. Misenheimer also found a poutine made from gravy, cheese curds, and ... gnocchi, replacing the fries, at Parma Ravioli. ‘We had an overwhelming response. Everybody who tried it loved it,’ says co-owner Carlo Zucconi. 💐 Have you ever wondered about where the flowers on Ottawa’s patio restaurants come from? It turns out that hundreds of them come from Brantim Farm and Garden Centre.

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT |
🌊 There are several water related items from over the weekend: • Boaters are worried that Chelsea is closing the Gatineau River launch, restricting access by motorized craft after 50 years of use. – CBC • In the past week, Ottawa Firefighters have rescued eight people from the Ottawa River, either around the Little Chaudière Rapids or the Deschênes Rapids. They are called Rapids, people, stay away from them. – Natasha O’Neill at CityNews • No, sewage does not flow into Dow’s Lake and yes, it’s very clean. – Olivia Grandy in Capital Current • Testing by Carleton University’s Global Water Institute shows that the Rideau River is also safe for swimming. – Sadeen Mohsen in the Ottawa Citizen 🚨 A now-former City Hall staffer has been arrested for vandalizing the National Holocaust Memorial June 8. Mayor Mark Sutcliffe says 46 year-old Iain Aspenlieder is no longer employed by the City in its legal department. Aspenlieder, who has been charged with ‘mischief to a war memorial, mischief exceeding $5,000, and harassment by threatening conduct’ for painting smears and the words ‘Feed Me’ in red on the Memorial, was denied bail and will remain in custody until his hearing July 9. – Paula Tran in the Ottawa Citizen
↪ A Kanata man has been charged with shooting paintballs at a ‘symbolic’ flag on a neighbours property between June 10 and 17. Neither the flag nor the man’s name were identified. The man has been charged with ‘two counts of harassment by threatening conduct towards another person and three counts of mischief/damage to property not exceeding $5,000’. – William Eltherington at CTV 🚶♀️ The Federal Public Service will need to be reduced by 24 per cent to meet promised savings says the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives. The Centre says that Prime Minister Mark Carney campaigned on ‘$6 billion in savings in 2026-27 and $13 billion a year in 2028-29’ which would result in massive cuts to the public service by the Centre’s calculations. – Josh Pringle at CTV 🛒 Gatineau is one of three Québec cities that will allow stores to stay open until 8:00 pm on weekends. Gatineau, Laval, and Saint-Georges will take part in a trial to determine how the change will affect consumers and employees. Aside from grocery stores and restaurants, shops close at 5:00 pm on weekends in Québec*. The trial will begin sometime this summer and last one year. – CBC
* There are all sorts of loopholes and exceptions, but work with us here. |
