FELIZ CINCO DE MAYO, OTTAWA

While not necessarily a big holiday across Mexico, the 5th of May has become an annual opportunity for North Americans to celebrate Mexican cuisine. Mexican restaurants are well represented in the capital – there is sure to something near you.

 

Central

▪️ Chilaquiles is celebrating today with a nachos special. It’s just $13 today, available for take-out and delivery. Call 613 699 7100.

▪️ The small Fiesta Pack at Sí Señor (506 Rideau St) includes six tacos, two Margaritas, and guac for just $40 or grab the large and enjoy 12 tacos, four margs, and guac for $75. Call 613 421 7490 for pickup or order for delivery from Skip the Dishes, Uber Eats, and Resto Zone.

▪️ Today through May 8th Mercadito (inside Queen St Fare at 170 Queen St) is offering a number of specials. For $95 the Cinco de Mayo Kit provides enough food for four, including a taco flight, beans, rice, guac, salsa, and chips. Also included is a Margarita Mixer, but you’ll have to supply the Tequila yourself. Order for pickup.

▪️ The Cinco de Mayo special at Margarita Restaurant (895 Bank Street) is a full-on feast for two with empanadas mix, tacos, corn ice cream, and even two margaritas. $95 + tax. Free delivery. Call 613 421 5802.

▪️ Today only at Taco de Oro (303 St Patrick St) the Cinco de Mayo special for two includes a starter of guac and chips, mains (tacos, rice and beans), drinks, and desserts, all for $59 + tax. Call ahead 613 241 4444.

▪️ Today only visit one of the Burrito Gringo’s locations and get a burrito for $5.99 when you purchase a drink. 

▪️ It’s an extended Taco Tuesday at Mexigo Cabana (1217 Walkley at Bank), where tacos are $3.95 for one, two cost $6.95, and a combo with rice and beans is $12.95. Takeout and contact less pick up only. Call 613 552 6054 to order.
 

East

▪️ Ola Cocina Taqueria (62 Barrette St, Vanier) Cinco de Mayo Fiesta for 2 has already sold out but they have plenty of tacos, nachos, and Freezy Margaritas at regular prices. Call to order 613 746 6222.

▪️ The 10 varieties of authentic 4” street tacos are only $3 each today at San Jose Mexican Food truck and grocery store. 1017 Carp Road in Stittsville. Call 613 413 2295 to order.

⭕ New Edinburgh resident Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the Chief Medical Officer of Canada, Theresa Tam, would like to point out to everyone that the best vaccine is the first vaccine you are offered. They are cleaning up a kerfuffle after the the National Advisory Committee on Immunization yesterday recommended the AstraZeneca vaccine only if you cannot wait for the Pfizer or Morderna vaccines.  [Maclean’s]

⭕ CEO of the company which deveoped the Pfizer vaccine says that it has so far withstood against all the variants. [CBC]

▪️ The design of the planned expansion for the Ottawa Hospital's new Civic campus has been released and it's not terrible. Each patient will have a private room with washroom. Once built, the old hospital would be reveloped for other health care uses. Queen Juliana Park would be relocated onto the top of a new underground parking garage. [Ottawa Citizen]

▪️ Deputy police chief – allegedly – tried to get out of charges in Durham by providing damaging information about higher-ups. The Ottawa deputy police chief, who is suspended for alleged sexual harassment, was previously the Durham deputy police chief. The plan did not work as he did not have damaging information against higher ups and tried to get some from another officer in disciplinary trouble – allegedly. [CBC]

▪️ The roof of the Andaz Hotel in ByWard Market caught fire last night due to a cigarette in a planter. The patio furnishings were destroyed but the Ottawa Fire Services saved the building itself. The hotel remains open. [Ottawa Citizen]
