The Community Equity Council of the Ottawa Police Service is seeking new members. 

Meeting for three hours every second month, the Council has been formed to create stronger relationships between the Ottawa Police Service and Indigenous, racialized, and faith-based communities in Ottawa.

The committee is looking for people who meet the following criteria:

Community Identity:

• Indigenous status
• Faith-based community
• Racialized community
• Gender (recognition of gender fluidity)

Relationship/strategic skills

• Critical Thinking
• Communication Skills (Active Listening)
• Ability to Build Trust
• Cross-sector skills working with a range of community members

🛻 Convoy News

•  The Federal government is appealing a court decision that found invoking the Emergencies Act was unconstitutional. Last month the Court issued a decision that said it was ‘unreasonable’ for the Federal government to invoke the Act because there were already laws on the books that permitted police to roust the Convoy siege from downtown. The government is arguing that the Court has applied the ‘reasonableness’ standard incorrectly as the judge made his decision using information that was not available to the government at the time. 🌻 Gardens

•  The Stittsville Goulbourn Horticultural Society has announced the winners of the 2024 photography competition. So many pretty pictures of flowers! Photos were judged by 40% photographic values, 40% horticultural value, and 20% on appearance and winners were awarded in eight classes: Purple is the colour of 2023, Upcycled plant pots, From September to Frost, Tiny Wings, Snow in the garden, Resting on the Porch, Art in the garden, John Curry Memorial Plaque. Best in Show went to Danny Kingsbury for his photo of a cluster of grapes. (Lesley McKay in Stittsville Central)

⚽ Atlético Ottawa

•  Atlético Ottawa has released its primary jersey for the upcoming season. The ‘Community First’ kit is sponsored on the front by Maple Lodge Farms, and with each kit sold, the Farms will donate a case of chicken products to organizations working to prevent food insecurity to families. 🇷🇺 Russian Embassy

•  A petition has been launched to rename the bit of street where the Russian Embassy is located from Charlotte Street to Navalny Street. The proposal would rename only the stretch between Wilbrod Street to Range Road and should not affect any other homes or businesses. Alexei Navalny was the leading opposition figure against Russian President Vladimir Putin and was imprisoned for his efforts. He died incarcerated last week at age 47. Charlotte Street was named after the only child of King George IV, Princess Charlotte, a woman who has no connection to, or ever visited, Ottawa. (William Eltherington at CTV)  (The petition)

🚊 OC Transpo

•  The O Train has travelled past Blair Station for the first time. Sure, it was so slow that workers were able to walk beside it on the route, but it's one more step to its opening next year. (Ottawa Citizen)

🚨 Ottawa Police Service

•  The Ottawa Police Service has issued a clarification on the ‘did Ottawa Bylaw not give out any tickets to the neo-Convoy protestors’ two Saturdays ago. Ottawa Bylaw originally said that Ottawa Police told them not to issue any tickets. Ottawa Police Chief Eric Stubbs had said that many tickets were issued by both. The clarification says that Ottawa ByLaw issued no tickets but the Police did give out some vehicle fines. Nobody was ticketed for fireworks. (Ottawa Bulldog)

☔ Snow Roundup

•  The Rideau Canal Skateway officially closed for the year last night. At 10 days, it was the shortest season it ever operated. Last year, of course, it did not open at all.
•  The Rideau Valley Conservation Authority says the lack of snow this winter may result in droughts this summer due to the lack of snowmelt.
•  Unless something radical happens before Friday, this will be the first February in Ottawa without a -20° day since records began in 1870. The coldest day this month was -18.7°.
