WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT |
🤝 A City employee and a landlord have been charged in a kickback scheme to get higher rates from City housing funds. The employee was charged with breach of trust and accepting a bribe; the landlord charged with bribery and fraud of $5,000. The now former employee worked for the department that arranged housing for refugees and other newcomers. The City’s auditor brought the scheme to light last December. – Natasha O’Neill at CityNews 🏒 Yesterday, THE OTTAWAN wondered if the Ottawa Charge would receive the equivalent of the Sens Mile. The answer is yes: Bank Street between Sunnyside Avenue and First Avenue will be adorned with Charge Avenue signs to recognise the women’s team’s place in the Walter Cup playoffs. – Don Brennan in the Ottawa Citizen 🚨 Neighbours have tipped off 1,400 vehicles to Gatineau Police for sporting out of province plates. In Québec, residents can be fined $400 if they don’t change the licence plate within three months of moving in from another province. Police say there are 140 active cases, with five tickets issued. – Josh Pringle at CTV 🎧 The latest edition of The 613’s Better Ottawa podcast has dropped. This edition, featuring economist Neil Saravanamuttoo and former journalists Jon Willing and Joanne Chianello, discusses where red light camera money should go, new legislation to boot bad city councillors, and how last weekend’s free transit days went. – Better Ottawa podcast |
The Poll Last time, we asked ‘Will the Charge take the Walter Cup this year?’ 41% Yes, all the way 33% No, but they’ll win the semi-finals 20% No, Montréal Victoire has it for the semi-finals 7% No, just no. Our hearts have been broken far too many times to allow hope. Today’s poll:
