      Quote

      • With all due respect to Stubbs, it is hard to believe that if any group other than convoy protesters were setting off illegal fireworks, bylaw would have been asked to withdraw to allow tempers to cool. In all likelihood police would have intervened forcefully and removed the protesters.

      • – Mohammed Adam in the Ottawa Citizen on Ottawa Police Services chief Eric Stubbs' defence to the police board that ‘we have a double standard or are sympathetic to the convoy movement. This is simply not true. We remain a neutral agency.’.

      WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

      🙏 Barrhaven

      🚒 OC Transpo

      •  Five passengers escaped from a bus that flipped on its side after a crash last night. Firefighters were sent at 7:30 pm after a bus crashed with another vehicle near the Ottawa Airport. The driver was freed through the windshield by the firefighters. None of the passengers nor either driver accepted an offer of a ride to the hospital. (CBC)

      🚨 Ottawa Police Services Union

      •  The former president of the Ottawa Police Association has pleaded guilty to disclosing personal information in contravention of information and privacy laws. Matt Skof made the admission Friday, after which criminal charges were dropped against him. The issue was over an audio tape, subsequently leaked, in which Skof discussed an undercover operation involving a homicide case with someone who was not a police officer. (David Fraser at CBC)

      🎓 Ottawa Carleton District School Board

      •  The Ottawa Carleton District School Board is mulling changing graduation to a commencement ceremony in order to include those who have not passed. The idea is that graduation is not inclusive as those students without passing grades are not able to celebrate with their classmates.The proposal would also axe trophies, medals, and other prizes. The Board will discuss the issue April 4. (Joanne Laucius in the Ottawa Citizen

        ➕ Related Dogs who had a passing grade in the therapy programme at Carleton University had their own convocation ceremony last Thursday. There is a picture of a dog wearing a mortar board and another of one wearing a bowtie for those interested in such things.

      💸 Fraud Hotline

      •  The City’s auditor general has released the results of calls to the Fraud and Waste Hotline in 2023. Ottawa Bulldog has a good round-up, so we’ll highlight some of its choices:
      •  an employee who was found to have worked out of province, without authorization,in violation of the City’s Hybrid Work Procedures
      •  an external vendor under contract with the City that was found to have completed a vehicle safety inspection that did not meet Ontario Ministry of Transportation standards, the City’s inspection checklist, or the terms of the standing offer
      •  bus operators leaving buses unattended during their shifts and blocking a lane of traffic or road visibility
      •  employee time theft (eg, leaving before the end of the shift, unauthorized breaks or leave);
      •  misuse of sick leave by employees;
      •  an employee who was found to have removed items from a City facility, for personal use and resale
      •  an employee using their City of Ottawa position title to promote their private business (Ottawa Bulldog) (The Report)

      📱 ArriveCAN App

      •  The Department of National Defence staffer who was suspended after being found to be the president of a contractor is said to have taken the job after the contract was completed. Dalian Enterprises says that the company had completed its work on ArriveCAN months before its president David Yeo became a public servant. (Darren Major at CBC)

      🌊 Flooding

      •  The City has released its first flooding opinion of the spring – and so far, so good. No significant flooding is foreseen at the moment. However, sandbags are available to the public at two locations – 29 Hurdman Road and 2145 Roger Stevens Drive – for those that wish to be prepared. (City of Ottawa)
