Isabelle Lajoie and Marc Bergeron bought the mill three years ago from the municipality, using their skills as an architectural technologist and an electrician, respectively, to refurbish it. The opening day party for Moulin Egan is June 27. We’ve mentioned it before, but the finest way to cross the river from Ottawa to Québec is the Quyon Ferry near Fitzroy Harbour. Hidden behind a paywall is a letter-to-the-editor of The Equity newspaper in Shawville, about the mill’s new lease on life: ‘When I was a young lad in the ’50s and ’60s living in Shawville, when a new couple started dating and they seemed to be marriage bound, it was often stated that “they get along like Shawville bread and Quyon butter!”’. 🍨 The father-son duo of Lawry and Jonah Trevor-Deutsch have bought the Old Ottawa South location of Stella Luna Gelato Café from the founding family (who still own the Stella Luna in Merrickville). The duo has opened a Stella Luna pop-up in the former Pub 101 location in ByWard Market. 🔥 After fire destroyed his restaurant in 2019, the owner of Vittoria Trattoria says he will start rebuilding an even bigger restro this summer. 🥖 Ameya Charnalia at Eat the Strip crosses over to Gatineau for bakery La Balade des Douceurs. Charnalia says the boulangerie ‘isn’t trying to be trendy. It doesn’t advertise. And it doesn’t need to’. 🍩 In the Ottawa Citizen, Peter Hum finds the successor to the cronut, the 140 layer dossant at Holey Confections. Between their three locations, they can sell 2,000 of them on a Saturday. ⛱️ Hum has also created a map-based guide to Ottawa’s best patios: 1 Elgin, Arlo Wine & Restaurant, Bar Lupulus, The Porch on Preston, NCC River House, Soif bar à vin, Spark Berr & Pizza, Tavern on the Hill, La Terrasse, and Working Title Kitchen.

What is it with Ottawa, missing artworks, and auctioneers? No sooner has a gentleman been imprisoned for stealing the Karsh portrait of Winston Churchill from the Château Laurier and selling it at Sotheby’s in London than a Group of 7 mystery has been unraveled after ten years. Around 1917, Sevener Tom Thomson gave his painting of the Tea Lake Dam in Algonquin Park to his friend, Charlie. Charlie’s sister, Flora Scrim, ran Scrim's Florist shop (still existing today on Elgin, but originally on Sparks Street). When Scrim died, she left her house and the painting to her longtime employee, Paul Chandler. Around 1977, Chandler gave the painting as a graduation gift to his nephew, Michael Murray. In 2015, Murray decided to part with it and the painting was picked up by Waddington's Auctioneers & Appraisers in Toronto and from that point it had disappeared from view. In 2022, Murray sued the auctioneers for $11 million. In its defence, Waddington's claimed that it had never received the painting. Last month, Waddington's wrote to Murray that it had the painting after all. Where had it been for the past ten years? Who knows. Also, the painting is unsigned, so it may not be a Tom Thomson painting at all – although the evidence is good. Meanwhile, Murray is going ahead with his lawsuit. |
