    WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

    🪑National Capital Commission

    • Both the mayor of Ottawa and the mayor of Gatineau have requested seats on the board of directors of the National Capital Commission. Ottawa mayor Mark Sutcliffe and Gatineau mayor Maude Marquis-Bissonnette sent a jointly signed letter to the Liberal, Conservative, New Democratic Party, and Green Party leaders with their wish list of what they want for the National Capital region, including more money for transit and training for potentially out-of-work public servants.

The eye-opening bit was their request to have voting seats on the National Capital Commission board, an organisation that largely exists to make public works outside of the jurisdiction of Ottawa and Gatineau.

    🚊 Transportation Plan

✏️ Ottawa Carleton District School Board

    • After an uproar from parents, the Ottawa Carleton District School Board is making a partial reverse ferret on school boundary changes. Under the initial plan, around 11,000 students would be changing schools in 2026. Other than schools that are currently ‘kindergarten to Grade 3’ and ‘Grade 4 to Grade 8’, no other schools will be changed to that configuration. The plan to close all English-only immersion schools has been dropped, with the new plan operating five English-only and six French-only. There are currently 15 of each.  Additionally,  parents will be able to request exemptions for their kids to remain where they are.

The CBC has posted the Board’s full document of its plans online here.

    🛻 Convoy News

    • Convoy coörganizers Tamara Lich and Chris Barber have been found guilty of mischief for their roles in the 2022 trucker convoy in Ottawa. The judge ruled that ‘the evidence shows that the duo routinely encouraged people to continue to remain at and join the protest despite knowing the adverse effect it was having on downtown residents and businesses’. The duo argued that they called for a peaceful protest and any disorder was the City’s fault.

Both were also found guilty of committing mischief themselves but the Crown requested that verdict be stayed. Barber was found guilty of counselling others to disobey a court order, something Lich was not charged with.

The pair were found not guilty on four other charges relating to obstructing police and intimidation.

    BUT, ONE MORE THING ...

Emma Stuart-Kiss in Capital Current has the infuriating story of how Ottawa lost its streetcars nearly 100 years ago. In 1936, Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King visited the World’s Fair in Paris and was enchanted by its chief architect, Jacques Gréber.

After being appointed to run the National Capital Planning Committee, Gréber was unequivocal in his hatred of rail blighting the City, resulting in the removal of Ottawa’s streetcar system within 10 years and shifting Union Station to outside the downtown core.

To add insult to injury, his Plan for the National Capital [PDF], usually known as the Gréber Plan, is otherwise an inspiring read and imagines an Ottawa / Gatineau that could-have-been.
