WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

🚌 Westboro Bus Crash

  • Ontario’s chief coroner has called for an inquest on the 2019 deaths of three people in a bus crash at Westboro Station. The driver was charged with three counts of dangerous driving causing death and 35 counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm but was acquitted on all counts. Three people were killed and almost two dozen people seriously injured when the bus hit a shelter overhang. The City has paid out $23 million in civil claims. (Jenna Legge at CBC)

⚖️ Rideau Hall Gate Crasher

  • The man who crashed the gates of Rideau Hall in an attempt to arrest Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has been granted statutory release. Corey Hurren, who was armed with a rifle, was upset over COVID 19 restrictions and the ban on assault-style weapons. He was sentenced to six years in prison in 2021, but has been out on day parole since 2022. (Darren Major at CBC)

🌊 Ottawa Beaches

  • Britannia, Petrie East Bay, and Petrie River beaches have high E. coli warnings today. Very few people are likely to consider swimming today in the rain, but if you are so inclined you may wish to wait a few days. (William Eltherington at CTV)

⚕️ ByWard Market

  • A full time paramedic has now been stationed at ByWard Market. One from a pool of 13 Ottawa Paramedic Service paramedics will always be on duty seven days per week, 12 hours per day. The first week of service saw 65 calls. (Elizabeth Payne in the Ottawa Citizen)

DEALS OF THE DAY

Mad about Patchwork has deals aplenty during the Better Than Prime Sale.

JB Fields’ “Backpacker” lightweight merino sock is 40% off at Great Sox this week.

BUT, ONE MORE THING ...

Chris Iorfida at CBC News has the tale of how US president Richard Nixon was the target of an assassination plot – and, had it occured, would have been carried out in Ottawa. American citizen Arthur Bremer was thwarted at the time by anti-Vietnam war activists blocking his view.

Bremer, who may have been the inspiration of Travis Bickle in the film Taxi Driver, was later sentenced to 53 years in prison for shooting Alabama governor George Wallace. Bremer was released for good behaviour in 2007 and is currently alive and living in Maryland
