The Poll

Yesterday, we asked ‘Are you consciously avoiding US-made products at the store now?’

93% Yes
2%  No
3%  I think it is pointless

That is one clear result.

We came across this web app over the weekend, SCANuck.  Many non-Canadian made items say things like ‘designed in Canada’. Scan the barcode and SCANuck will – most of the time – show where it is actually made.

Today’s question:

We welcome any comments ‘hello@theottawan.com’

    WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

🗳️ Public employee who refused to return to office over COVID 19 reasons has lost his legal case.

      •  The chief of field programs at Elections Canada argued that COVID 19 continues to be a threat to health and refused to obey the return to office order by the Treasury Board, invoking his right to refuse dangerous work under the Canada Labour Code. Elections Canada subsequently investigated the safety of office work, releasing a report that said it met or exceeded guidance. Eventually, the case went to Federal Court where the judge employee said the employee did not demonstrate that the safety in the office was unreasonable.

Andrew Duffy in the Ottawa Citizen

      🌊  Flooding

      •  The City’s Environment and Climate Change committee has proposed rebates for homeowners on items to combat flooding. If approved by the full City Council, residents could apply for:

        • $3,000 for a sump pump in a new sump pit or $1,500 for a sump pump in an existing pit

        • $2,500 for an exterior storm backwater valve

        • $1,000 for indoor backwater valves

        • 100 per cent of the building permit fee for protective plumbing work

        City of Ottawa

      🏠 Rockcliffe Mansion

      •  A battle over the redevelopment of a century-old mansion in Rockcliffe has been been settled by the Ontario Land Tribunal. The Tribunal ruled that two mansions, larger than the previous single mansion, could be built over the objections of neighbours.

      💰 Stittsville

      • If you are a Stittsville resident – and only a Stittsville resident – your local councillor might have $200 for you. Stittsville ward councillor Glen Gower annually gives out $2,000 in Community Micro-Grants, $200 at a time, for arts, culture, and heritage projects, including community events. DEALS OF THE DAY

      BUT, ONE MORE THING ...

Impudent talk show host Bill Maher brought up Ottawa’s new idling bylaw on his show this weekend while he was in discussion with federal Liberal leadership contender Chrystia Freeland.

While a little fuzzy on the details – the bylaw has already passed and doesn’t apply when it's colder than 0° or warmer than 27° – Maher says ‘This just pisses people off, just like in America, they still haven't got the memo that this s*** don't work’.

Real Time with Bill Maher is on Crave, originating from HBO in the US.
