HELLO OTTAWA

We were blown away when we re-opened the email account this morning, after nearly a week of ignoring it.

Thank you very much to everyone who sent condolences over Darren’s dad’s passing. They are very much appreciated. 

Darren’s dad, Lee, had only ever visited the Capital once in his 82 years but had planned to visit again after we moved here in 2019. But then COVID. But then health. 

We’re grateful that we have visited the West Coast to see Dad and Mom as many time as we did this past year – thank you Flair Air as much as you drive us crazy. 

Here is your reminder from the universe: don’t skip too many opportunities to spend time with people you love.

    • – The number of new jobs expected to be created by the new Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, which just broke ground at the Rideau Carleton Casino in Manotick. In the 90s, when Darren edited a newspaper in Vancouver, he went to the press office of the brand new Hard Rock Café to arrange accreditation for a photographer. The office had three wickets: press, radio, and television. The greeter looked at Darren up and down and said, Press, right? (Manotick Messenger)

    • – The 12 year-old is the youngest Canadian to graduate from university. She has received a bachelor’s degree in biomedical science from the University of Ottawa. The tween plans to go to graduate school in the autumn. (The Canadian Press)

    🎨 National Gallery of Canada

    •  Jean-François Bélisle has been appointed as the new CEO of the National Gallery on a five year term. Most recently, he was chief curator of the Musée d'art de Joliette, in Joliette, PQ. Bélisle says that charges of low morale and unfilled positions can be opportunities. (CBC)

    🏥 Larga Baffin

    •  The Ontario Land Tribunal has ruled against neighbours who opposed the Large Baffin development. Larga Baffin is a planned six story building at Hunt Club Road and Sieveright Avenue. The facility would house people from Nunavut who have come to Ottawa for health care. The Upper Hunt Club Community Association has been fighting the plan at each step, citing traffic and the building’s height. The Tribunal stated the development ‘does not significantly exacerbate the existing transportation, operational or safety issues’, pointing out it’s on Hunt Club Road. (CBC)

    🛣️ Sir John A MacDonald Parkway

    •  The proposed new name for the Sir John A MacDonald Parkway is Kichi Zībī Mīkan. The National Capital Commission plans to make the renaming official June 22. Before 2012, the parkway was known as the Ottawa River Parkway, Kichi Zībī Mīkan would return it, basically, to that name, this time in the Algonquin language. (CTV)

    🛍️ Nordstrom

    •  Tomorrow is the last day of shopping at Nordstom at Rideau Centre. The US chain announced last March that all stores would be closed in Canada. Tomorrow is the final day for those left open. (Josh Pringle at CTV)

    🚌 OC Transpo

    •  The City’s auditor general stopped the overwhelming complaints about bus drivers by no longer accepting them. The Auditor General runs a waste-and-fraud hotline, receiving five to ten complaints a day about bad driving by bus drivers. Nathalie Gougeon says that the public calling in about the drivers has become an abuse of the hotline and will no longer accept or investigate these particular City workers. (Elyse Skura at CBC)

    🏒 The Sens

    •  Another bidding group has dropped out of the Sens auction. Toronto billionaire Steve Apostolopoulos is out, stating that he was frustrated with the process taking so long. Imagine what his frustration would be with the process of winning the Cup. (Faces magazine)
