HELLO OTTAWA Storm Resources It's down to 31,000 homes still without power but Hydro Ottawa says, all together now, most will be powered up by tomorrow. The City has set up a special page for food resources. If you need financial aid click here for the online application or call 311. A number of local farms and rural businesses were affected by last Saturday’s destructive storm. These farms will be unable to participate in farmers’ markets for the time being, as they scramble to rebuild broken infrastructure and get planting. Some of the farms have created fundraising pages and are asking for donations of any size. COVID-19 NEWS ⭕ The Ottawa Carleton District School Board has lifted the mask mandate for students. The new maskless-era begins, again, on Monday. [CTV] ⭕ Magnetic Hill Zoo in New Brunswick will be vaccinating their cougars, lions, tigers, marmosets, gibbons and caribou against COVID 19. The Zoo will use a new US vaccine developed especially for animals. [CBC] ⭕ A doctor vaccinated hundreds of kids under the age of five until Toronto Public Health told him to stop. WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT ▪️The Planning Committee has approved an 18 storey mixed-use building on a vacant lot at at the corner of Somerset Street West and O’Connor Street. As usual, people advocating density to keep neighbourhoods.walkable approve of it, people who oppose density are against it. The developer will pay Somerset Ward $550,000 for its affordable housing fund and $50,000 for community gardening. [Ottawa Citizen] ▪️CJRO, the community radio station in Carlsbad Springs, has new owners. Created by the Carlsbad Springs Community Association, CJRO has broadcast shows for the community in both French and English since 2019. The new owner is a brand new non-profit society created solely to run the station, CJRO Radio Inc. The Leamy Lake Parkway, Leamy Lake Pavilion, and the Leamy Lake pathway will all be closed until further notice. [Ottawa Citizen] ▪️The tallest tree in Ontario survived the storm. The 47-metre-tall white pine lives in the Nature Conservancy of Canada’s Gillies Grove Nature Reserve next door to Ottawa in Arnprior.
