Hello Ottawa

In Today’s Edition

Correction

Yesterday, we referred to the book Ottawa Made as Made in Ottawa, which is obviously a completely different thing. Please accept our apologies.

QUOTE

  • Whose lives they’re going to ruin and whose lives are going to remain anonymous. That’s where the real difficulty is

  • – Lawyer Lawrence Greenspon expressing his frustration with the Ottawa Police Service’s policy of when to release names of arrested persons. Greenspon would prefer names remain anonymous until their day in court, but finds the current policy equally unfair. The Service releases some names to the public, but not others, and it is not clear how it makes the decision.

Agenda

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

🚌 If you are looking for a high profile job, the City has posted the job application for General Manager of OC Transpo. The City is looking for 10 years experience, transit expertise, and what it gently terms ‘political acuity’. This upcoming Friday is the last day current general manager Renée Amilcar’s tenure. Amilcar is off to run transit infrastructure in Québec. – City of Ottawa

↪ Carleton University will not be issuing parking passes to students that live in Ottawa and have access to OC Transpo. Carleton blames high demand and the closure of one of its garages. Students who live outside OC Transpo’s bounds can apply for a parking pass but only if they waive the student friendly transit pass. – Camille Wilson at CTV

↪ Presto card holders will now be guaranteed that they won’t spend more than a monthly pass. People who tapped with a credit or debit card were already capped, but Presto card users would need to keep topping up. The new cap begins August 1. – CBC

🔥 A burn ban has been placed all across Ottawa. Even if you have a valid burn permit, there are no fires permitted until further notice. – Ted Raymond at CTV

🦈 Leamy Lake beach is closed due to a ‘spill’. The National Capital Commission has banned swimming but says dry land activities are still permitted. What’s in the water has not yet been disclosed. – CBC

🎧 The latest edition of the City’s podcast, OttaTalk, has dropped. This episode deals with by ByLaw officers possibly showing up at your door. – CBC

THE DAILY POLL

How do you rate Renée Amilcar’s term as head of OC Transpo?

Did a great job

Did as good a job as one could do with what she had to work with

Not great but not for lack of trying

  • Previously in ottawan polls:

  • We asked, ‘What do you do when the air gets smoky?

    • 24% Stay inside

    • 6% Mask up

    • 69% Shrug shoulders and carry on

    • 1% My COVID-bought HEPA filters now have a new lease on life!

  • Commentary

  • ▪️ “I also mask up. On a trip in June to Vancouver with the smokers/tokers and exhaust fumes from cars, I masked up on the street. Got some ‘looks’ ... but if I had been tattooed up and down my body, nobody would have even given me a look at all!? LOL”

  • ▪️ “Depends on how bad it is”

▪️ “Close all the windows and stay inside”

▪️ “You need an option for ‘Stay inside; mask up and turn on the HEPA air filters’!”

▪️ “I always mask as covid is still in the air as well among other things like measles. ”

▪️ “Stay in during the worst of it.”
