The number of recommendations that the coroner’s inquest jury has made over the death of .. The jury also ruled yesterday that Abdi’s death was a homicide. Abdi died after a beating by Ottawa police officers attempting to arrest him after he sexually assaulted several women at a coffee shop. Almost all 57 recommendations – addressed to the police service, Ottawa Police Service board, the City of Ottawa, and several ministries – require improved mental health actions. The inquiry showed that Abdi had severe mental health issues but little help was offered to him. | | Marlo Glass in the Ottawa Citizen |

OTTAWANS OF THE DAY |
Maureen Constance Boyd, Jean-Pierre Kingsley, André Bernard Lalonde, Wendy Muckle plus General Walter John Natynczyk and Ryan Reynolds |
All were inducted today into the Order of Canada by Governor General Mary Simon. The first four live in Ottawa, the general (retired) lives in Hartington which is really the outer limit of THE OTTAWAN’s balliwick, and Ryan Reynolds is listed as a Vancouver/New York resident but as far as we’re concerned, he’s still ours. | | Appointments to the Order of Canada |

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT |
🗜️ Ottawa Carleton District School Board |
▪️Ottawa Carleton District School Board schools in Ottawa are either too crowded or too empty says a new report by the Financial Accountability Office of Ontario. The report shows that 19 schools are only 60 per cent used but 52 schools are over 100 per cent capacity. Ontario school boards are prohibited by law from closing schools, even if they are underutilized. | | Gabrielle Huston at CBC |
|
|
🏈 Ottawa RedBlacks |
▪️The Ottawa RedBlacks received two ‘A-’ grades in the first-ever players’ union survey. The ‘A-’s were in football operations and equipment. The team received ‘B’s in training and medical staff, family treatment, team travel, and training camp. However, the team received a ‘C’ for management and administration. All in all, a good report and better than most of the teams. View the report cards here. | | The Canadian Press |

🎿 FIS World Cup |
▪️Dunrobin’s Hannah Schmidt took bronze in FIS World Cup women’s ski cross in Arosa, Switzerland last night. Canadians Marielle Thompson and India Sherret took gold and silver. Schmidt’s brother Jared placed fourth in the ‘Big Final’. | | Martin Cleary in the Ottawa Sports Pages |

|
🏚️ Care Homes |
▪️Villa Marconi says allegations of poor hygiene at the care home are ‘all false’. The chair of the board of directors says that the facility has all supplies needed, refuting a union allegation that residents had to be dried with pillow cases. However, he did confirm that staff were owed hundreds of thousands of dollars in back pay and needs a year to pay it. | | Kate Griffin at CTV |

OTTAWA HISTORIC LOGO T-SHIRTS |
An Ottawa Historic Logo t-shirt would probably make a terrific Christmas or Hanukkah gift – but it’s too late.
You can order if you like – we’d never say no to a sale – but the chances of the t-shirt making it to you before Dec 23 is pretty much none. |
It’s a great way to ring in the New Year, though, after New Year’s Day. There is no way one would arrive before then at this point. |

| Ottawa Journal T-Shirt | The Ottawa Journal began in 1885, edited by the legendary William Dafoe, later of the Winnipeg Free Press. It was closed in 1980. | Help support THE OTTAWAN by buying one of our historic logo t-shirts. | |
