HELLO OTTAWA

The National Capital Commission would like to know what you think about its Active Use Programme, the one in which it opens up various parkways to cyclists and pedestrians in the summer.

Kitchissippi resident Mayor Mark Sutcliffe has critized the programme, claiming – without using any of the vast traffic information that the City collects – that the surrounding streets become clogged. Kitchissippi Ward councillor Jeff Leiper has written to the Commission that the Mayor is speaking on his own – the official policy of the City remains in favour of the Active Use Programme.

Meanwhile, the Chaudière Crossing over the Ottawa River will remains closed to vehicles until September 1 to complete a green energy pipeline. Pedestrians and cyclists can still use the bridge.

🌪️ Barrhaven Tornado(es)

•   Researchers say that it was two tornadoes that hit Barrhaven last week.
•  Many people received the tornado warning on their phones long after the threat had passed.

🌊 Low Pressure 

•  People in Gloucester-Southgate, River, Capital, and Alta Vista wards may have low water pressure tomorrow night to  Wednesday morning. It won’t affect everybody in those wards, but people who live in the area serviced by the Conroy water tank will notice water pressure drop. 🖌️ House of PainT

•  The annual celebration of hip hop arts and culture is seeking volunteers. This year is the 20th anniversary of the festival, and volunteers receive a free House of PainT 2023 t-shirt, food and beverage while on shift, and entry to all events. 🗳️ Kanata-Carleton Byelection

•  The Progressive Conservative candidate skipped last Thursday’s debate. Liberal candidate Karen McCrimmon, the NDP’s Melissa Coenraad, and the Green Party’s Steven Warren did show up and debate. The PC candidate, who had promised to show, said that he decided to campaign door-to-door instead. The byelection is needed because former Provincial Minister of Long Term Care, Progressive Conservative MPP Merrilee Fullerton, suddenly resigned without explanation. 🎶 Hooray for Carlingwood

•  Carlingwood Shopping Centre, home of the World’s Largest Canadian Tire, is up for sale. The Canadian Tire, built on the site of the old Sears, has 19 years left on its lease, and 350,000 square feet of residential housing can be built in the northwest corner. If you are interested, contact Cushman and Wakefield. No price is given but a similarly sized shopping centre in Waterloo was sold recently for $270 million. (Don Wilcox in the Real Estate News Exchange)

•  CTV has pictures of houses that you can purchase for under $761,000 in nine different neighbourhoods. The number isn’t random – $761,000 is the current average price for a house in Ottawa. (Josh Pringle at CTV)

•  The NAC’s Wood Terrace is the setting for a free concert by Les Fireflies, the trio of musicians who bring Scottish, Irish, and Acadian music to life with fiddles and other instruments. Bring your own folding chair or blanket. 7:30 PM at 1 Elgin St.

•  The Urban Botanist is holding a Dried Flower Bouquet Workshop on Tuesday August 8. $60 per person.
•  The Upcycling Summit returns for another online festival of embroidery and crafts,, with loads of tips on living a life of less waste. August 14 to 18, all online, and all free.

Almost ten years ago, we read this facinating article in the New Yorker, ‘Graphene: Fast, Strong, Cheap, and Impossible to Use’, which argues that the world will require a reliable source of graphene computer chips, and no one has pulled this off yet.

Graphene computer chips would allow transisters to become thinner than they are now, as silicon chips have almost reached their maximum capacity.

Kanata based Northern Graphite Corporation – graphite is made from graphene – has signed a letter of intent to use its graphite to make batteries in Québec. We find this interesting and local.

We do not find this in any way a suggestion to invest in anything and if you invest in something because you read it in a section of a newsletter called ‘And One More Thing’ you deserve whatever financial pain you get.
