HELLO OTTAWA

Congratulations, Gatineau, you have a new mayor.

Former councillor Maude Marquis-Bissonnette, running as a member of the Action Gatineau municipal party, won 41.7 per cent in yesterday’s byelection. 

Previous mayor France Bélisle resigned in February, complaining of a hostile climate for elected politicians. Marquis-Bissonnette will serve until the scheduled election next year.

Gatineau also got a new city councillor. Olive Kamanyana resigned her seat to run for mayor, coming in third. Catherine Craig-St-Louis, of the Action Gatineau party, won the Carrefour-de-l’Hôpital ward with 41.8 per cent of the vote.

🏃 Terry Fox

• The statue of Terry Fox on Wellington Street is being moved to Sparks Street today. Public Services and Procurement Canada says the move will place the statue on the route the Fox ran during his Marathon of Hope in 1980. Although this is an appropriate location for the statue, it’s being moved to allow construction of a new building for Senator and Member of Parliament offices. (Josh Pringle at CTV)

• Ahlul Bayt Islamic School is the top elementary school in Ontario, Nepean High School is the 36th best secondary, and highest in Ottawa. The rankings come from the Fraser Institute which has been doing these school rankings for decades, and the efficacy of its rankings has been debated just as long. the ottawan leans more to the argument that the rankings are more closely linked to neighbourhood affluence than school quality. (Barrhaven Independent) (Fraser Institute School Report Card) (Methodology)

🙏 Barrhaven 

•  The house of the murdered Barrhaven family has been listed for sale. In March, mother Banbaranayake Gama Walwwe Darshani Dilanthika Ekanyake, children Kelly, Ranaya, Ashwini, and Inuka, and a family friend Gamini Amarakoon Amarakoon Mudiyanselage were found dead in the home. Second, you’ll want to book your specific two hour visit out of three available time slots. This will slow the visitors down to a pace that won’t freak out the chickens. BUT, ONE MORE THING ...

Two cyclists, Jeff Mills and Chris George, through their organization Cycle MORE have worked out a  scenic 200 km looped bike-friendly route from Parliament Hill to Carleton Place. The route takes you along the Ottawa Canal and Experimental Farm, through the TransCanada Trail to Carleton Place, Almonte, and Pakenham, back up to Carp, then return along Ottawa River.
