STATISTICS OTTAWA

    NUMBER

    • 2%
    • – The amount each household is expected to save on its water bill annually if City Council approves a new water rate structure.
    • Approved by the Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee and the Environment and Climate Change Committee, the City would move away from consumption charges to fixed ones.
    • Industrial and commercial water users would see a 5 per cent rise.
    • City of Ottawa

    OTTAWAN OF THE DAY

    • Marcia Wallace

    • After a long and difficult executive search, the chief administrative officer of the Corporation of the County of Prince Edward  is Ottawa’s new general manager for planning, development and building services.

    • As GM for P, D, and BS, she will ‘oversee the city's planning and heritage files, including development approvals, real estate and economic development, and infrastructure projects that aren't related to transportation’.

    • Wallace will start June 16.

    QUOTE

    • It beggars belief that Gatineau Park hasn’t already gained protection

    • – Bruce Deachman in the Ottawa Citizen, recognizing that nothing except the goodwill of the National Capital Commission protects Gatineau Park. Bill S-289, which would have enshrined the 361 sq km greenspace with the same protections as a national park, died on the order papers when Parliament was dissolved.

    SPORTS

    WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

👑 King Charles and Queen Camilla’s itinery for their whirlwind tour of Ottawa next week has been released. Some places to view them may be:

    • Monday, 1:50 pm. The couple will be reintroduced to Ottawa by having a meeting at Lansdowne. We don’t know where, but we wager they will want to try the hot wings at JOEY’s.

    • Monday, 2:50 pm. They will head to Rideau Hall and plant a tree.

    • Tuesday, 9:50 am to 10:15 am. The couple will take a carriage down Wellington Street from outside the Bank of Canada to the Senate. Remember, the Senate is in the old train station / Government Conference Centre these days.

    • Tuesday, 10:55 am. Laying of a wreath at the National War Memorial.

      – Guy Quenneville at CBC

🐴 The Ottawa Police Service mounted unit has officially returned. The Service’s prior mounted unit was disbanded in 1993 due to costs. The revived unit of four horses and riders are budgeted at $1.4 million  per year.– Ottawa Citizen

🌊 Ottawa Public Health will only be testing beaches for E.Coli once per week this summer, instead of daily. The agency says that testing takes 18 - 24 hours, making daily reporting misleading because it is old information. It also points out that the National Capital Commission also only tests its beaches weekly. Beaches tested will be Mooney’s Bay, Britannia, Petrie Island, and Westboro. – Josh Pringle at CTV

💼 For Federal public employees, the required bilingualism proficiency for supervisors in the Capital will be raised from intermediate to advanced. In other words, that’s a rise to CBC from BBB. The change will apply only to new hires – existing staff are exempt.  – VC de la Ronde in the Ottawa Citizen

    DAILY POLL

    The Poll

Last time, we asked ‘What do you think the Sens should do about an arena?’

26% Nothing. The Canadian Tire Centre in Kanata is fine.

45% Building a new arena in LeBreton Flats is a good idea

6% They should build it downtown inside a repurposed office building

21% They should build an O Train extension to the Canadian Tire Centre instead

3% Hear us out: 24 Sussex Drive, with combined Prime Ministeral residence / corporate box

    0% Other

    BUT, ONE MORE THING ...

A small advocacy group wants Eastern Ontario to become a dark sky preserve. The idea is, over time, to minimize the amount of light that is leaked skyward at nighttime allowing humans and animals both to see the true night sky.

The area planned by NWNC Dark Sky Project covers Cornwall to Hawkesbury, through to Petawawa, Bancroft, Algonquin Provincial Park, and down Highway 401. – Kimberley Molina at CBC

Dark Sky International and the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada both list dark sky locations.
