Marcia Wallace After a long and difficult executive search, the chief administrative officer of the Corporation of the County of Prince Edward is Ottawa’s new general manager for planning, development and building services. As GM for P, D, and BS, she will ‘oversee the city's planning and heritage files, including development approvals, real estate and economic development, and infrastructure projects that aren't related to transportation’. Wallace will start June 16.

WEDNESDAY DINING + DRINKING UPDATE |
☕ Lawrence from Sky’s the Limit Coffee will be brewing up samples, cups of coffee, and beans at the Ottawa Street Markets Farm Store on Saturday May 24 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm (1805 Gaspé Ave). 🧺 Cinnaholic Lansdowne turns 6 this year. To celebrate, get $5 Signature Rolls all day Friday (May 23). 🌭 There are an extremely limited number of discounted tickets to Le Moulin Wakefield Mill Hôtel & Spa’s Beer + BBQ = Father's Day event on Sunday June 15. What Dad gets: one tasting of four beers, a gourmet hot dog prepared in ‘Moulin style’, and an entry into a draw to win a gift package. 🍷 Ottawa’s Best Wine Tour stops at Buyers and Cellars Wine Cellar, Kin Vineyards, and Farmgate Cider 🍅 If there’s still room in your garden for some tasty vegetable crops, Ferme Juniper Farm's organic seedlings sale continues this weekend and next. 🍺 A third Ottawa Beer Store will be closing. The one at 900 Bank Street will be shuttered as of July 20. Previously announced were the closures of Beer Stores on Carling and in Bells Corners. 🚜 In North Gower, Foster's Family Farm is growing callaloo, a staple of dishes in the Caribbean but hard to find fresh in Canada. The farm started growing the leafy, green ‘superfood’ after seasonal agricultural workers from Jamaica suggested it. 💰 Journalist Randall Denley argues that the City’s plan to remove free parking from ByWard Market is a cash grab, not a plan to help Market businesses. ‘What if people wanted to look around at stores and then go out to dinner? Or even if they wanted to linger over their dinner, maybe have a drink and talk to friends? These activities are discouraged by the two-hour parking limit. You’re to have your fun and move along as quickly as possible so another person can take your place. What do people think this is, Europe?’ 📘 Peter Hum, in the Ottawa Citizen, challenges the Michelin Guide people to survey Ottawa restaurants like it does Vancouver, Toronto, and the entirety of Québec. The catch, of course, is its a pay-for-play deal. Tourism organizations are rumoured to pay $1 million per year in Vancouver, and $2.1 million over three years in Québec. 🦓 The Kitchissippi Times has a look at the new bar on Somerset Street, Natural History. Nice overview of the interior design choices, not much discussion of the drinks menu.

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT |
👑 King Charles and Queen Camilla’s itinery for their whirlwind tour of Ottawa next week has been released. Some places to view them may be: • Monday, 1:50 pm. The couple will be reintroduced to Ottawa by having a meeting at Lansdowne. We don’t know where, but we wager they will want to try the hot wings at JOEY’s. • Monday, 2:50 pm. They will head to Rideau Hall and plant a tree. • Tuesday, 9:50 am to 10:15 am. The couple will take a carriage down Wellington Street from outside the Bank of Canada to the Senate. Remember, the Senate is in the old train station / Government Conference Centre these days. • Tuesday, 10:55 am. Laying of a wreath at the National War Memorial. – Guy Quenneville at CBC 🐴 The Ottawa Police Service mounted unit has officially returned. The Service’s prior mounted unit was disbanded in 1993 due to costs. The revived unit of four horses and riders are budgeted at $1.4 million per year.– Ottawa Citizen 🌊 Ottawa Public Health will only be testing beaches for E.Coli once per week this summer, instead of daily. The agency says that testing takes 18 - 24 hours, making daily reporting misleading because it is old information. It also points out that the National Capital Commission also only tests its beaches weekly. Beaches tested will be Mooney’s Bay, Britannia, Petrie Island, and Westboro. – Josh Pringle at CTV
💼 For Federal public employees, the required bilingualism proficiency for supervisors in the Capital will be raised from intermediate to advanced. In other words, that’s a rise to CBC from BBB. The change will apply only to new hires – existing staff are exempt. – VC de la Ronde in the Ottawa Citizen |

A small advocacy group wants Eastern Ontario to become a dark sky preserve. The idea is, over time, to minimize the amount of light that is leaked skyward at nighttime allowing humans and animals both to see the true night sky. The area planned by NWNC Dark Sky Project covers Cornwall to Hawkesbury, through to Petawawa, Bancroft, Algonquin Provincial Park, and down Highway 401. – Kimberley Molina at CBC Dark Sky International and the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada both list dark sky locations. |
