    • – The number of charges issued by Ottawa Bylaw over AirBnbs and other violations in the first year of the City’s new short-term rental rules. There are just over 800 AirBnB-type rentals available in the city right now, after 787 were removed for not meeting the standards of the bylaw. (Josh Pringle at CTV)

    🗞️ Local newspapers

    •  The Arnprior Chronicle-Guide, Carleton Place–Almonte Canadian Gazette, Kemptville Advance, Renfrew Mercury, and Perth Courier have all been shut with immediate effect. All were owned by Metroland Media, a sister company to the Toronto Star. While the Toronto Star is safe, Metroland Media has been put into bankruptcy, closing 70 newspapers and putting 600 people out of work with no severance pay. (Celeste Decaire at CBC)

    Catherine Morrison at the Ottawa Citizen has some updates for Public Service workers:

    •  Some of the top ranking members of the Public Service have been shuffled:

      🔻 Chris Forbes, former deputy minister of Environment and Climate Change, will become deputy minister of finance
      🔻Sony Perron, president of Shared Services Canada, will become president of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec
      🔻Scott Jones, executive vice-president of Shared Services Canada and associate deputy minister of Public Services and Procurement, will become president of Shared Services Canada
      🔻Suzy McDonald, associate deputy minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food will become associate deputy minister of finance
      🔻Jean-François Tremblay, deputy minister of Employment and Social Development, will become deputy minister of Environment and Climate Change
      🔻Paul Thompson, deputy minister of Public Services and Procurement, will become deputy minister of Employment and Social Development

      Our congratulations, or our condolences, to all.

    •  The Union of Taxation Employees says that almost all of its members have been retroactively paid for when they were on strike.

    •  The union members at the Canadian Food Inspection Agency have ratified their agreement. It’s no different from the other agreements in pay or work from home but does have its own unique twist: marriage leave has been replaced by a one-time five-day paid vacation leave for everyone.

    •  The Federal Anti-Racism Secretariat is moving from the Department of Canadian Heritage to the Department of Employment and Social Development Canada.

    •  The Federal government and the Public Service Alliance of Canada are arguing over the $40,000 cap on damages for federal workers who have experienced discrimination in the workplace. The Federal government says the amount is appropriate, the Alliance says it should be removed and even having a limit at all is discriminatory in itself.

    •  Bank of Canada security officers, who have been negotiating for two years, say they are not being offered salary increases that are consistent with inflation, unlike other bargaining units. 

    •  Carmen Sorger is Canada’s new Ambassador to Uruguay, leaving her job as director of the Caribbean Engagement Division.

      Algonquin Park has released its 2023 Autumn Colour Report. The report is updated daily with the current leaf colours of maples, tameracks, poplars, and aspens. Mid-September to early October will see the colour change of the Sugar and Red Maples, early to mid-October will feature the yellow-orange colours displayed by poplar and birch species, plus the orange colour of the Sugar Maple understory. Mid to late October and it's all over as the tamarack is at their peak yellow colour.
