HELLO, OTTAWA

Farmer's Markets

Gardeners are probably in the thick of planning and seeding, indoors anyway. But those who prefer to buy fresh produce from local farmers should mark their calendars for May, when the new York Street Farmers' Market launches. The market will be open Saturdays through to October, and will offer nutrient-rich produce and meats from local farmers and producers. The latest vendors to sign up to the new market offer a rich selection of meat and produce:

▪️ In addition to participating in the York Street Farmers’ Market, Vintage Soil Farm, a woman-owned, horse-powered six acre agriculture business in Kemptville also offers CSA shares.

▪️ The Rutabaga Ranch from Brinston, Ontario offers veggie CSA boxes to be picked up from Arlington 5 in Ottawa (farm pick up has already sold out for 2021).

▪️ Ferme L’eau du Ruisseau raises free-roaming, grass-fed beef and grows fresh vegetables, and in 2020 started a high diversity fruit orchard on its 200 acre property in Low, Québec.

▪️ Lilliput Farm in Oxford Station, North Grenville is a membership farm that raises organic, antibiotic-free grass-fed chickens and turkeys as well as vegetables via weekly deliveries.

More Maple

▪️ Continuing yesterday’s rundown of Ottawa region sugar bushes, Ma Cabane á la Maison is a new initiative supporting nearly 70 of Québec’s maple syrup businesses and sugar shacks with home kits of repeatable or ready to cook meals. How it works: choose a sugar shack from the list, select a meal from the menu, and decide whether to pick up directly from the sugar shack or have it delivered (where possible). Participating Metro grocery stores in Québec also provide pickup points. The menus are varied but most are offering meals for one to four people with items like French Canadian pea soup, ham and pork dishes, pancakes, baked beans, sugar pie, and of course, maple syrup.

▪️ The Little Sugar Shack in Woodlawn is taking preorders for maple syrup via its social media pages. Customers can choose by grade - Amber, Dark, or Very Dark - and by quantity. Customers will be notified in April of pickup time and payment. Pickup points will be in Woodlawn and Kanata.

Base Layer Shopping

▪️ Sure, it’s going to be a mild and sunny weekend, but we all know that winter is likely to return for a final blast before spring truly arrives. Right now, Stanfield’s is offering 20% off winter base layers so it’s the perfect time to stock up on cozy, Made in Canada basics. The women’s Two Layer Wool Blend Base Layer  is now $44, while the men’s Superwash Wool Base Layer is a mere $56.
