HELLO OTTAWA

Big changes in how the ByWard Market is run are coming. 

Currently, two organizations have jurisdiction over the area: the ByWard Market Business Improvement Area and Ottawa Markets. Both organizations have mandates to ensure the ByWard Market is thriving but they are not required to work together and neither has any responsibilty to residents in the area.

The working plan is to dissolve the Business Improvement Area and Ottawa Markets and replace it with a municipal services corporation, which is intended to be more focused and less political.

    🏠 Houses

    • The City’s Built Heritage Committee plans to designate Crabtree House at 559 Lang’s Road in Vanier as a heritage property. New Provincial rules say that if buildings are not designated as heritage by December 31, 2024, no other buildings can be deemed heritage until 2027.

    • ‘Crabtree House is a two-storey, flat roofed structure constructed in the International style and designed by Ottawa architect Matthew Stankiewicz in 1962. It features a rectilinear form, flat roof, multiple cladding materials, large windows, overhanging eaves and limited ornamentation, a brise-soleil, stylized geometric forms, and a natural integration into its surroundings. The house was built for Graham and Dorothy Crabtree. Graham worked at Crawley Films and the National Film Board and his work helped develop Canada’s identity as a nation in the mid-20th century. Dorothy worked at the National Research Council and contributed to the development of the Canadarm. The property reflects the growth of the NRC during this period and was also part of the Fairhaven Cooperative, Canada’s first cooperative.’

    • ➕Related You can buy houses for under $400,000 in Renfrew. Inside Ottawa Valley is really underselling this story: The prices for the three houses are actually $324,900, $259,900, and $149,900.
    • ➕Related The average house price in Ottawa has dropped $130,000, from $837,517 to $708,968.

    💥 Orléans Explosion

    • Stealing hot water tanks from two unfinished homes without turning off the gas is alleged to be the cause of last month’s Orléans explosion. The information came from court documents filed as part of the arrest of a 35 year-old man. (Guy Quenneville at CBC)

    🛂 No Papers, Please

    • Travellers to the US from the Ottawa airport can now pre-clear their paperwork with US customs using a new app. You still need to talk to a customs officer but those using the app will be diverted to a different, presumably shorter, queue. (Michael Woods at CTV) (Download the App)

    💊 Bad drugs alert

    • The City is warning that there is an increased risk of overdosing by  people who abuse drugs. Ottawa Public Health is seeing a rise in the unregulated supply of benzodiazepines (the prescription versions are  Xanax, Ativa, Rivotril, and Valium) and in xylazine(which are muscle relaxers used by veternarians and not approved for humans). Public health says call 911 if someone is overdosing. (City of Ottawa)

    🎷 OTT Music

    • The City is looking for music on the phones and on the streets. The Music on Hold programme is 35 songs from local musicians which will play when a City staffer puts you on hold. Insert your own joke here. The O Buskers programme selects buskers to entertain in O Train stations. Successful applicants will use an app to choose their time and location to play.     • Today marks the start of March Break week in Québec, and Camp Fortune’s Spirit Week is underway.

    • Forum Lecture: Indigenuity is a free event at the Ottawa arts Galley & Arts Court, 10 Daly Ave. Architect and Status Indian Alfred Waugh will be discussing his architecture practice, Formline Architecture, including its work on the Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre on the University of British Columbia’s campus.

    • The Canadian Museum of Nature’s Spring Break at the Museum invites children young and old to explore ‘Wolves! Shapeshifters in a Changing World,’ which features hands-on activities. 
    • The Delmas Indian Residential School of Delmas, Saskatchewan was burnt down by students in 1948. Ashes and Embers is a new film documenting the stories and recollections of survivors of the school. There will be a reception following the 39 minute screening. Free but reservations are required. Ottawa Art Gallery, Alma Duncan Salon, 50 Mackenzie King Bridge. 
    • Live music industry workers invited to an open house at Rainbow Bistro, for networking, snacks, and discussion around the Canadian Live Music Association study Live Music Labour in Ontario. Presented by the Ottawa Music Industry Coalition, the event is free but registration is required. 76 Murray St. 

    Wednesday

    • This International Women’s Day, participate in the Embracing our Creative Selves experience, presented by Digi60 Filmmakers Festival and The Lotus Movement. Explore your creative self through movement, community, and mental health. The program gets underway at 6:00pm at the Digital Arts Resource Centre. Yoga Flow, networking, and films by women+ filmmakers.  
    • Women on Site, the community for women in the construction industry, will be holding an International Women’s Day meetup at the HIntonburg Public House. 
    • Chef’s Paradise (1314 Bank St) presents an international food adventure celebrating the women of Ottawa’s food and beverage industry. Tickets include snacks, drinks, and a donation to Cornerstone Housing for Women. 5:00pm to 800pm. $39.55.

    Just Announced

    • The Taxes for Artists Workshop is a free, hour long webinar presented by Heather Marie Connors, who has worked extensively with non-profit arts organizations. March 25 at 10:00am, via Zoom. 
    • Paint it Up! Is now accepting applications for the 2023 season. The program, which is a project of Crime Prevention Ottawa and the City of Ottawa, provides funding for outdoor mural art projects that support vandalism prevention. Applications must be received by April 14. 
    • Sign up for the four week Euchre Tourney at Nita Brewing and you and your partner will enjoy a 20o glass of beer each week, and there are cool prizes to be had. $36. There are only 16 team spots available. Thursdays (March 16, March 23, March 30, and April 6) 
    • Possible Worlds presents an Abstract Painting Basics intro workshop, for any level from beginner to experienced, on March 29. $90 (includes access to the in person workshop, your own gouache paintings, a gouache mini painting kit to take home, and a handout).
