WEDNESDAY DRINKING + DINING UPDATE

  • 🍺 From 5:00 pm today, Hintonburg Public House is donating 25% of its food and drink sales to Bruce House, the organization that provides housing and support to Ottawa’s vulnerable people living with HIV. HPH is also screening Long Time Running at 8:00 pm, in honour of Canadian National Film Day.

  • 🧀 Manotick’s Mill Tavern throws a Thursday Cheese Night every week. If for some reason you require more details beyond the words "Cheese Night":  when you purchase a beverage you can acquire an accompanying personal size cheese platter for five bucks. Dine in only; it all starts at 5:00 pm.  Don’t even think about going this week; it’s already sold out.

  • 🧁 Almanac is open Good Friday (no deliveries though) and Saturday but closed Easter Sunday. It’s your final chance to scoop up their hot cross buns, and they’ll also have mini carrot cakes and scones.

  • 🦃 There are fewer than 12 hours to book an Easter Dinner Bundle from Meatings. Choose the ham or the turkey dinner but do it before midnight or you'll be out of luck.

  • ☕ Drive up to Wakefield this weekend and visit Ferme Juniper Farm’s store on its grand re-opening. While you’re there enjoy a sandwich so bountiful it’s called a Farmwich, baked treats, coffee, and more. 375 Shouldice Road.

  • 🍴 In Apartment 613’s Best Bites column, Hannah Manning and Kiersten Vuorimaki ate at Café Deluxe (‘the real star of Café Deluxe is their cookies’), Natural History (‘The vibes in the natural history museum inspired hangout are immaculate, with fun taxidermy, books, maps, ships in bottles crammed everywhere you look, funky low lighting and eclectic furniture’), and Second Wife (‘it was such a fantastic experience’).

  • 🥙 At Eat the Strip, Ameya Charnalia finds this week’s gem in the Westgate Shopping Centre food court. Shawarma Glory has more than a little competition in the Canada’s Shawarma Capital but Charnalia says, ‘this is a shawarma that punches well above its weight, offering an unbeatable combination of flavour and value’.

  • 🍕 In the Ottawa Citizen, Peter Hum attempts the impossible: picking ‘Four Ottawa pizza joints that hit the spot’. Making the cut are: House of PizzaLouis Pizza and RestaurantRoberto Pizza, and Schoolhouse Pizza

Bakery hours over the weekend:

  • 🥖 3 Tarts Bakery is open all weekend, from Good Friday to Easter Monday, for your last-minute celebratory baked treats requirements.

  • 🥖 True Loaf Bread Company is open Good Friday and Saturday the 19th from 7:00 am to 1:00 pm, then closes until Thursday April 24.

    RENFREWIAN OF THE DAY

    Lou Mulvihill

The arguable father of sledge hockey was honoured with a permanent exhibit of his chosen sport in Renfew’s BEI Arena.

Mulvihill has been active in promoting and developing the sport, which allows people with physical limitations to play hockey by use of a sled. With Mulvihill playing as captain, Team Canada took bronze at the 1994 Winter Paralympics.

    QUOTE

    • Due to the escalation of issues and volatility in the US, CHEO strongly encourages individuals to refrain from travel to that country at this time

    • – CHEO chief executive Dr Vera Etches in a memo to staff, advising them to avoid travelling to the US. If they must, she says ‘they should log out of hospital applications, ensure laptops don’t include sensitive patient information, and change passwords after any inspection’ as US border agents have the right to inspect all electonic items at the border.
    • The memo also may be the first instance of a children’s hospital recommending staff carry a ‘burner phone’.
    • – Bloomberg News

    SPORTS

    • 🏒 NHL Ottawa Senators 3 – Chicago Blackhawks 4 last night
    • But of course, this game doesn’t matter – the Sens are already in the playoffs. First up are the Leafs, on dates to be determined. Tickets are on sale tomorrow at noon.

    WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

🏚️ Get thee a nunnery! Due to the bankruptcy of builder Ashcroft Homes, the Sisters of the Visitation convent at Richmond Road and Island Park Drive is again up for sale. Ashcroft’s plans were to build condos on the property but not tear down the abandoned convent itself.  The oldest parts of the building date back to 1865. – Arthur White-Crummey at CBC

🌉 The Alexandra Bridge Coalition has released a letter asking Federal party leaders to ‘halt demolition and commit to restoration’. The National Capital Commission is determined to pull down and replace the 124 year-old beauty. The Commission does not believe restoration is viable. – The Letter [PDF]

🚧 City Council has overruled staff about a plan to expand a gravel quarry in west Ottawa. City staff recommended that the site at 4200 March Road be rezoned to mineral extraction and to remove the ‘green space and natural environment area designations’. The site is next to an existing quarry whose owner wishes to expand the business. West Carleton Quarry has fifteen days to appeal to the Ontario Land Tribunal. – Ted Raymond at CTV

🚨 Make sure you buckle up this weekend as the Ottawa Provincial Police do a seatbelt blitz over the Easter weekend. The Provincial Police won’t be on Ottawa city streets but they do patrol the Queensway and everywhere outside city limits. – Natasha O’Neill at CityNews

    BUT, ONE MORE THING ...

In the Kitchissippi Times, historian Dave Allston tells the tale of The 1956 Miracle in Westboro. On that November morning, a standing-room-only streetcar of 70 passengers was hit by a dump truck with ‘17 tons of rock recently mined from Frazer Duntile quarry at Clyde Avenue’. No one died.
