HELLO OTTAWA

the ottawan is three years old as of last Saturday.

For those of you who have hung in there since the beginning, thank you for your tolerance. For those of you who joined just yesterday, we apologize in advance.

Hallmark says that the traditional third anniversary gift is leather, the modern gift is crystal or glass.

We’ll add a third: tell a friend about us. Click that green button below and let someone know about the ottawan and why they should join us.

It’ll be a lot more meaningful than leather or glass, and somewhat less expensive.

    • – The number of people who donated to Mark Sutcliffe and Catherine McKenney’s mayoral campaigns, respectively. Both raised an essentially equal amount of money, around $500,000.  (Joanne Chianello at CBC)

    Ottawans of the Day

    • Ludwik and Gursharan
    • The two OC Transpo bus drivers were honored as the Transecure employees of the year. Transecure is the ‘neighbourhood watch’ programme conducted by OC Transpo staff. In this case Ludwik and Gursharan – like Madonna, awardees are only ever identified by one name – discovered a man who had been stabbed and provided first aid until help arrived. (City of Ottawa)

    Quote

    • The problem is when you go to a bigger city, you’re starting from ground zero. You’re just a small fish in a much, much bigger pond
    • – Ottawa music scene supporter, rapper J Chinnasz [Marcus Mitropoulos in Capital Current]

    ⚖️ In absentia

    • The University of Ottawa professor who was charged with a 1980 Paris bombing then allowed to return to Canada due to lack of evidence is again on trial. Sociology professor Hassan Diab was extradited to France in 2008, spending three years in jail, after a composite photo was matched to him. Diab denies involvement and says he was a student in Beirut at the time. The trial begins today in absentia as Diab will not attend but his legal team will mount a defence. (Kim Willsher in The Guardian)

    🐀 Rats

    • The walls of the Prime Minister’s Official residence, 24 Sussex, are stuffed with dead rats. So many, a report reads, that there is a concern for air quality. Work to remove asbestos and dangerous electrical issues is planned for this spring. The residence has been unoccupied since 2015 although some staff, including the Prime Minister’s chef, were onsite until last Autumn. An intriguing question is posed in the article, though: the pool and sauna continue to be frequently used but it’s not known by whom. (Bryan Passifiume in the National Post)

➕ Related Here’s a video taken Thursday of rats leaping from a garbage truck leaving an apartment building on Fisher Ave.

    🛻 Convoy Law

    • The Convoy lawyer who was sued for defamation by a PR firm has reached a settlement. Brendan Miller had alleged that an executive of Enterprise Canada had carried a Nazi flag during the Convoy in order to discredit the event. Enterprise countered that not only had Brian Fox not been in Ottawa that day, he was a Pierre Poilievre supporter. In a statement, ‘The parties have agreed to accept the ruling of [Inquiry] Commissioner Rouleau as conclusive and final and put the issue behind them.’ (Christian Paas-Lang at CBC)

➕ Related The Canadian Civil Liberties Association is still trying to sue the Federal government over the calling of the Emergencies Act. The Association argues that the government did not have sufficient cause to call the Act, despite what the Inquiry report said. And we just saw that even the lawyer for the Convoy has agreed with the Inquiry.
