The Poll

Yesterday, we asked ‘How will you celebrate St Patrick’s Day?

20% Something traditional: like wearing green or eating Irish stew or going to mass, etc

4% Something unforgivable: like drinking green beer

65% Nothing at all, it's just another Monday

10% Shhh. You'll catch the eye of the leprechauns

On the daily ‘how did we do today’ link at the bottom, an anonymous reader asked ‘What are you doing with all the data you collect in the polls?’ So, that will be today’s poll:

Birthday Shoutout

Happy Birthday to  OTTAWAN member ‘Anonymous’!

We welcome any comments ‘hello@theottawan.com’

STATISTICS OTTAWA

    NUMBER

    • $36,000
    • – The amount of money that is owed to Hair Republic by the Hudson’s Bay Co. The salon, which is located inside the Bay at Rideau Centre, uses the Bay’s cash register and card system resulting in the department store holding back payments.* The Bay also owes Hydro Ottawa $401,962, Ottawa Police $2,892, and the City of Ottawa $148,478.
    • Katelyn Wilson at CTV
    • * This is how THE OTTAWAN understands the issue. The story doesn’t actually say.

    OTTAWANS OF THE DAY

    • Victor Boddy and Teagan Thomas
    • The two University of Ottawa researches lead a team that is using a relative of the tobacco plant to produce GLP-1 receptor agonists, the magic ingredient that allows Ozempic to combat type 2 diabetes and assist in weight loss. The project’s info page lives here.

    • University of Ottawa

    QUOTE

    • I think they’re targeting me because I’m the harshest critic of what they’re doing at Meech Lake

    • – Secretary of the Gatineau Park Protection Committee Jean-Paul Murray has been fined five times – at $509 each – by the municipality of Chelsea under its ‘peace and good order bylaw’ which ‘prohibits abusive and insulting language — or swear words — being directed at municipal politicians, police officers, and officials’.  Murray has been vocal about Chelsea’s handling of Gatineau Park.
    • Andrew Duffy in the Ottawa Citizen

    WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

    👀 Ottawa Police Service

    • The Ottawa Police Service wants residents to register on  a database of security cameras to help it locate videos of crimes.  Camsafe is owned and operated by the Belleville Police Service, which has made it available for free to any police department. Residents and businesses are asked to register their doorbell or security camera with their address and, should the police believe that the camera may have caught something, the camera owner will be contacted.

    🗑️ Trail Road Landfill

    • The City is making an environmental assessment under the Environmental Assessment Act to extend the life of the Trail Road landfill by another 15 years. Trail Road is expected to be closed by 2038 but, if given the go ahead, another 5.5 million cubic metres of residential trash would be piled upon it.

A public meeting will be held at South Carleton High School, tomorrow, 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. 3684 McBean St. K0A 2Z0

      Josh Pringle at CTV

    ⚖️ Black Class Action Secretariat

    • A proposed class action lawsuit by Black public employees has been turned down by a Federal court. The Black Class Action Secretariat had argued that there is systematic racism within the federal public service and sought $2.5 billion in damages. The judge said the case did not ‘sufficiently meet the class-action requirement that the claims raise common issues’ and that other current cases overlap with the proposed lawsuit.

    ☢️ Chalk River Nuclear Waste

    • The Kebaowek First Nation is two for two in its fight against a proposed nuclear waste dump in Chalk River. A Federal judge ruled Friday that construction of the dump would put Blanding's Turtle and two endangered bat species at risk. The First Nation had asked for a judicial review over the approval of the dump by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, which had said that it had adequately consulted with Indigenous groups previously.

In January, the court had ordered the Canadian Nuclear Laboratories to redo its environmental assessment.
